Magma debuts as Genesis performance subdivision with hotted-up GV60 electric SUV
The Genesis GV60 Magma has been priced for Australia at precisely $130,000 before on-road costs, topping the luxury compact SUV’s range.
This model is the very first road car for Magma, Genesis’ newly established motorsport and high-performance sub-brand, and an analog to owner Hyundai’s highly-regarded N division.
As expected, there are plenty of similarities between the GV60 Magma and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N ($109,000 before on-road costs).
They share Hyundai’s 800-volt E-GMP underpinnings, motors on both axles, an 84kWh battery, and stupendous 448kW and 740Nm outputs
A ‘Boost Mode’ increases this to 470kW and 790Nm for 15 seconds; though this is 20Nm above its Hyundai donor car, the Magma’s 0-100km/h sprint time is, again, identical at 3.4sec.
The Ioniq 5 N’s groundbreaking ‘N e-shift’ virtual gear shift, a facsimile of an eight-speed transmission with simulated engine sounds, is present and correct, with revised regenerative braking including a one-pedal drive mode.
Differences between the Ioniq 5 N and the GV60 Magma – aside from obvious visual ones — are to preserve the Genesis’ calmer demeanour in day-to-day driving.
Active noise cancellation inside, double-glazed windows, and increased sound deadening in the doors and floorpan compensate for the increased road noise of the Magma’s low-profile tyres.
The GV60’s driving modes are considerably simpler than the Ioniq 5 N’s, whittled down to just GT (comfort and high-speed stability), Sprint (maximum responsiveness and handling sharpness) and My (mix’n’match).
Magma-specific changes to the GV60’s interior are a new steering wheel, ‘Chamude’ suede-like upholstery, orange highlights (optionally grey) and more form-fitting bucket seats. The latter appear to be very similar to the Ioniq 5 N.
The GV60 Magma comes fully equipped, with $4000 matte paint the only cost option. Even the staggering Magma Orange in these photos is on the house.
All prices listed are before on-road costs.
