A lot of car enthusiasts love the wagon bodystyle, but how many of them are left on sale locally?
Wagons, oh wagons. Where did they go?
The long-roof bodystyle has become somewhat of a cult classic star of the Australian new car market – loved by some, but bought by very few as most Aussies take up SUVs instead.
But with the recent release of the high-performance BMW M3 Touring this year and the ever-growing popularity of the Subaru Outback, it made us think: how many different wagons are still being sold in Australia?
This article hopes to bring to light what remains of the wagon market in Australia. There might even be some you have forgotten about!
Let’s dig in.
Alpina B3
The even more plush version of the BMW 3 Series, powered by a potent 364kW/730Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six engine. Sold in very limited numbers.
Price before-road costs: from $145,900
Audi A4
The Audi A4 offers plenty of practicality but with the luxury badge lots of Aussie love. The model uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 183kW/370Nm and is available in Avant or Allroad wagon body styles. This model is also available as a sedan.
Price before-road costs: from $76,734
Audi A6
The bigger sibling to the A4, the Audi A6 uses a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 engine that produces 183kW/600Nm and is available in a single Allroad 45 TDI quattro configuration.
Price before-road costs: from $116,375
Audi S4
A significant step up in terms of potency and performance from the base A4, the Audi S4 uses a 260kW/500Nm turbocharged petrol V6 engine. In typical Audi fashion, it’s fitted with the brand’s quattro all-wheel drive, making it perfect for a (fast) run to the nearest ski village during winter months.
Price before-road costs: from $107,169
Audi RS4
If you thought the S4 was a rocket ship, then the RS4 is on an entirely different level. Using a smaller 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V6 engine also used by Porsche, the mighty wagon produces 331kW/600Nm and uses an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Price before-road costs: from $156,069
Audi RS6
Swap out the 2.9-litre V6 engine with a twin-turbocharged V8, throw it in the bigger A6 body and you get the Audi RS6. This recently updated wagon now extracts an insane 441kW/800Nm from its mammoth 4.0-litre V8.
Arguably one of the most aggressive wagons on sale today, the RS6 competes almost in a league of its own. And for those who don’t know it, it’s a sleeper, too. It shares its engine with cars such as the Lamborghini Urus SUV and (fellow wagon) Porsche Panamera.
Price before-road costs: from $239,969
BMW 3 Series
When you think of a European wagon, you probably think first of the BMW 3 Series in touring guise. In Australia, it’s still available in a non-M, 330i spec, powered by a 190kW/400Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
Price before-road costs: from $98,700
BMW M3 Touring
The long-awaited and fastest ever 3 Series wagon, the M3 Touring launched in 2023, packing a serious 375kW/650Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six petrol engine, along with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system.
Price before-road costs: from $180,100
Citroen C5X
We ran a Citroen C5X as one of our long termers during 2022 and it was a popular item among the many wagon-lovers at Chasing Cars. The C5X with its turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol four-cylinder engine with 133kW/250Nm impressed our journalists, along with having a quiet cabin and decent ride quality.
Price before-road costs: from $57,670
Genesis G70 Shooting Brake
We’ve been able to sample the G70 Shooting Brake a few times over the last year or so, including a trip to the Hunter Valley with Drive Against Depression. The G70 in wagon form is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 179kW/353Nm and is paired with a eight-speed automatic transmission.
Unfortunately, the G70 Shooting Brake is not sold locally with the 2.5-litre or 3.3-litre engine found in the sedan variant.
Price before-road costs: from $76,727
Mazda 6
Loved by many, the Mazda 6 wagon is a good looking thing and a sensible choice for a growing family. Having been recently updated, the 6 is powered by 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engines, with the turbocharged version producing 173kW/420Nm.
Price before-road costs: from $37,440 to $55,535
Mini Clubman
The Clubman with its smaller wagon frame is a niche choice these days, but it’s still on sale. It’ll likely not be for long, as the Mini brand works on the new Cooper hatch and Countryman small SUV for 2024.
The Clubman is powered by 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines, with the most potent form producing 225kW/450Nm in JCW form.
Price before-road costs: from $49,200
Peugeot 308 GT
Peugeot’s 308 GT wagon is another niche choice in Australia’s small wagon world, but adds French flair to the bodystyle. Only one variant of the wagon is available that uses a very small 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 96kW/230Nm.
Price before-road costs: from $50,490
Porsche Panamera
Porsche’s first front-engined wagon has sold in small numbers in 2023 (just 69 units shifted in 2023), but offers a very Porsche-like driving experience with up to 500kW of power in 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 ‘Turbo hybrid’ spec.
Price before-road costs: from $223,200
Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo
Although the Porsche Taycan is also available in sedan form, the Cross Turismo wagon edition adds greater practicality, but of course at a price. Power and torque outputs for the electric Porsche wagon start at 350kW/500Nm.
Price before-road costs: from $185,200
Skoda Octavia
Our 2022 Chasing Cars Car Of The Year winner, the Skoda Octavia, was well received by the judges for its breadth of capability, practicality and rapid nature in RS spec. Highest outputs for the wagon are 180kW/370Nm.
Price before-road costs: from $53,890
Skoda Superb
Skoda’s more expensive sedan and wagon combo, the nicely premium Superb takes things up a notch from Octavia with a 206TSI petrol engine.
Price before-road costs: from $67,290
Subaru WRX
Subaru’s iconic all-wheel drive sports sedan can now be had with a wagon body, replacing the outgoing Levorg body style. Its 2.4-litre turbocharged flat-four petrol engine has outputs of 202kW/350Nm and of course uses Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive.
Price before-road costs: from $50,990
Volvo V60 Cross Country
The Volvo V60 Cross Country is the last remaining Volvo wagon sold in Australia, but it’s likely to go all-electric as part of the brand’s wider plans. It is currently available in Australia with a 2.0-litre mild-hybrid turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 183kW/350Nm.
Price before-road costs: from $74,990
