Omoda 4 and Omoda 7: new-look small and medium SUVs flaunt new design direction in local debut

Chery is expanding its SUV offering in Australia even further, with its Omoda sub-brand bringing its 4 and 7 models this way.

Sitting below Omoda’s only Australian offering, the 9 large SUV, the 7 will enter the mid-size SUV category. Below that is the 4, a compact SUV Chery/Omoda hopes will bring younger customers to the brand.

Promising “advanced technology, strong value and electrified powertrain options”, the Omoda 4 and Omoda 7 debut in Australia at the Everything Electric show in Sydney.

Both cars are in crowded segments not just in the broader market, but within Chery’s own showrooms. 

The Omoda 4 will butt up against the Chery Tiggo 4 ($23,990 driveaway), Chery C5 ($28,990 driveaway) and Jaecoo J5 ($25,990 driveaway), to name three. 

Meanwhile, the Omoda 7 will fight for attention with the Chery Tiggo 7 ($29,990 driveaway) and Jaecoo J7 ($39,990 driveaway). There’s even more coming, with Chery’s Lepas L6 and iCaur V25 also Australia bound.

Details beyond that, unfortunately, are thin, with Chery/Omoda promising prices and specs closer to the 4 and 7’s launches next year.

Revealing them at the Everything Electric show, on 18^th September, strongly implies both will have hybrid and/or electric powertrains. It’s plausible the 4 and 7 could inherit powertrains already sold with other Cherys.

There’s a lot of options. The compact Omoda 4 could recycle the Chery C5’s self-charging hybrid system, which pairs a turbocharged 1.5L engine with an electric motor driving the front wheels. 

The same engine could join a plug-in hybrid system as per the Jaecoo J5, or use one of several fully-electric powertrains in the Chery stable.

The Omoda 7 could use the Jaecoo J7’s plug-in hybrid powertrain, which enables all-wheel drive. In the Jaecoo, an electric-only range of at least 80km is claimed.

Chery Australia provided interior photos of the 7, but not the 4. The Omoda 7’s interior has two attention-grabbing features – a reclining front passenger seat and a central screen that can slide itself over to the passenger.

Australian sales of the Omoda 4 and Omoda 7 will start in the first half of 2027.
