Porsche Mission S: 911-topping, mid-engined hybrid supercar concept set debut on October 16th

Stuttgart aims to steal Tesla Roadster thunder by unveiling its 918 hypercar successor globally on the same day, set to spearhead bold expansion in the coming years

Porsche is set to “preview a potential mid-engined super sports car platform for the future” globally on October 16th (Australian time) going by the official name of Mission S.

Touted as the spiritual successor to the German carmaker’s V10-powered Carrera GT and plug-in hybrid-V8-powered 918 Spyder, the new-generation hypercar is set sit above the iconic 911 lineup as figurehead topping Porsche’s product rollout through to 2035, announced this week.

The countdown on Porsche’s website

“The Mission S is our tribute to the sportscar and to the vision of Ferry Porsche,” states a landing page on the marque’s public website, complete with a countdown clock to its European debut date of October 15th.

Perhaps not coincidentally, this is the same date – with similarly obscured teaser elements – as Tesla has planned for its perpetually delayed global unveiling of the electric new-generation Roadster.

No technical details have yet been revealed for Mission S outside of Porsche’s official description of the “development of a mid-engined super sports car platform that will enable a model line that sits above the iconic 911 sportscar,” clearly suggesting more than one model iteration.

However, teaser images and an official 30-second video posted by Porsche to social media reveals an (equally iconic) ‘air fan’ device synonymous with the marque’s air-cooled internal combustion engines, accompanied with the description “timeless, minimalist and focussed”.

It’s unclear at this stage whether the device in question is functional or cosmetic, but intimates that – unlike Tesla Roadster – the Mission S is most likely to be electrified petrol powered in line with current 911 engineering ethos.

While there is much online speculation that the Mission S formula could offer flat-eight-cylinder power and that its platform is derived from that of the Lamborghini Temerario and Audi Nuvolari, any confirmation of technical detail awaits Porsche’s formal unveiling next week.

The Mission S is likely the successor of 2013’s 918 Spyder.

Other models in the Porsche pipeline

During Porsche’s recent product expansion announcement “through 2035”, the marque confirmed the imminent 2028 full-year production run of the long-awaited all-electric 718 Boxster and Cayman twins.

Also set for series-production commencing in 2028 is a new internal combustion and PHEV-based “SUV in the B-segment”, potentially platform shared with Audi, to sit alongside the current Macan BEV.

Porsche has promised “emphasising the DNA of the 911 even more strongly across all model lines” in its future product planning, while expanding its staple sportscar lineup with more “highly emotive 911 derivatives”.

Further, a three-row SUV sat in Europe’s D segment “positioned above the Cayenne” is, according to Porsche, a possibility that it is exploring for future range expansion, while “intensifying its collaboration with Audi through the use of the PPE and PPC platforms”.
