The new Roadster has been re-unveiled to the world, featuring Cybertruck-like styling radically different from the first version we saw back in 2017
Tesla has unveiled its latest version of the Roadster, featuring spectacular rocket-powered abilities that CEO Elon Musk has promised will “crush every track record that ever existed”.
In a theatrical event held at sister brand SpaceX’s testing facility in Texas, Musk outlined what he said would be the “only, long-term, manually driven car that Tesla makes”.
Readers may remember Tesla first unveiled its first iteration of the revived Roadster back in 2017, which at the time was promised to go on sale by 2020, but the long-delayed version has now been confirmed for production in 2028, though its prospects for Australia are unclear.
The top-spec ‘Rocket’ version of the Roadster was on display, equipped with 10 SpaceX-sourced rocket thrusters using compressed air to perform stunts such as driving up a curved ramp and flipping through the air, and jumping over the entire Tesla lineup.
Most impressively, it landed perfectly flat on its wheels each time.
More conventionally, Tesla also showed the Roadster completing a 0-60mph (0-97km/h) run in 0.81 seconds backed by its rockets to aid the launch.
The ‘Rocket’ variant features just one seat and is said to be available by invitation only, though even the regular ‘Thrust’ model featuring two seats is said to be able to crack the one-second 0-60mph mark.
Tesla has noted a top speed of 230mph (370km/h), though Musk added their intention to “crack halfway to the speed of sound” which is roughly 618km/h, and it’s unclear if that would be on the road or in the air.
Exact details for the powertrain, battery or range are yet to be revealed but the steer-by-wire – controlled by a ‘yoke’ will feature on the new two-door.
