Cult micro car returns – still cute, still a two-seater, but now it’s electric only
The Smart #2 brings back the world’s most famous two-seater city car as an EV to make everyday parking virtually guaranteed while also promising a range of nearly 300km.
Smart #2 debuted at this week’s 2026 Paris motor show as a successor to three generations of the Fortwo that was last sold globally in 2024.
Adopting the hashtag naming convention of the Mercedes and Geely German-Chinese joint venture brand, the Smart #2 – pronounced hashtag two – followed the Paris show’s trend for small, affordable electric cars.
The Smart #2 is 2.746mm long – extending beyond the original 2.5-metre Fortwo though slightly shorter than the third-generation Fortwo it more directly replaces.
Smart, however, says the #2 matches the ridiculously tight 6.95 metre turning circle of the original car.
The #2 sits on a freshly developed platform called the Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), different to the SCA EV platform shared with other Geely-owned brands including Volvo (EX30) and Zeekr (X).
There’s a floor-mounted 35.8kWh battery and the company says there’s a targeted WLTP of 290km.
There’s a 60kW/130Nm electric motor sending power to the rear wheels, and surprisingly for a micro car it features a multi-link rear suspension.
A split tailgate returns, with separate upper glass section and a lower section that can either aid loading or provide a bench for seating – with a 120kg max weight.
The Smart #2 Concept featured a front-row bench, though the production model reverts to a more traditional two-seat layout, with an armrest sitting above a dual storage section including cupholder linking the seats.
Smart is pricing the Smart #2 from 19,990 Euros in Europe (about $32,000 Australian), with sales beginning in 2027.
A Smart insider told Chasing Cars the Fortwo successor can be expected in Australia. “We have the Smart #1, #3 and #5 already in Australia, so why wouldn’t we also bring the #2?” he said.
The all-EV Smart brand is sold in Australia by Mercedes-Benz distributor LHS Auto, with the Smart #1 starting from $49,900. It’s a bigger car than the Smart #2, however, with more doors, more seats, and a longer electric range.
