AMG’s first inhouse electric SUV brings rapid performance and rapid charging
The Mercedes-Benz performance arm AMG has revealed its first dedicated electric SUV, setting up a battle of the super-rapid super-SUVs with Porsche’s Cayenne Turbo Coupe EV.
AMG’s anticipated GT SUV is the high-riding twin to the division’s electric GT four-door coupe, sharing its AMG-EA 800-volt platform, triple electric motors, and many other components including design features.
A GT SUV 63 sits at the top of the range, featuring a trio of electric motors to deliver up to 860kW/2000Nm and claiming a 0-100km/h time of 2.7 seconds. Porsche quotes 2.5 seconds for its 850kW Cayenne Turbo Electric using launch control.
Mercedes says the GT SUV brings benchmark sustained power delivery, with the range-topping 63 and mid-range 55 producing a continuous output of 530kW.
Doubling the sprint speed to 200km/h from standstill sees the AMG edge out the Porsche by a couple of tenths – 7.2 versus 7.4 seconds, while its top speed is 10km/h higher at 270km/h – provided an optional Driver’s Package is added.
The AMG GT SUV 63 and mid-range 55 follow the GT coupe with simulated AMG V8 sounds and gearshifts that includes haptic seat feedback. They both feature two axial-flux electric motors at the rear and one axial-flux electric motor up front bring rear torque vectoring and fully variable all-wheel drive.
The entry 53 model features dual motors – one on each axle – and mimics the noise of an AMG six-cylinder engine.
The 5084mm-long SUV sits on a three-stage-adjustable air suspension and the 63 comes standard with AMG Active Ride Control that brings automatic pitch and roll stabilisation – claimed to reduce dive under braking and lift under acceleration. It’s optional on the 55.
There’s also rear-wheel steering to aid low-speed manoeuvrability and high-speed stability.
AMG GT SUV 63 and 55 buyers have the choice of 106kWh or 128kWh (useable) batteries. The smaller battery offers 600kW DC charging and the potential to add 380km of WLTP range in just 10 minutes. The larger battery allows for up to 710kW rapid charging, claimed to add up to 450km of range in 10 minutes.
The 53 model is available only with the 106kWh battery and will be the first to go sale – late October with a starting price of 113,050 (approximately A$183,000).
Pricing has yet to be announced for the 63 and 55 that are due in European showrooms from around March 2027.
Mercedes-Benz Australia has yet to confirm timing and pricing for either the electric AMG GT coupe or SUV.
