Subaru Impreza 2023: S-Edition unveiled to celebrate 30 years of iconic model

The S-Edition is an Australia-only special, and equipped with exclusive STI accessories

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Impreza, Subaru Australia has unveiled the Impreza AWD S-Edition based on the outgoing fifth-generation model

Offered exclusively in Australia in limited numbers, this S-Edition is priced from $36,290 before on-road costs.

STI parts have been used across the Impreza Special Edition

Like the standard Impreza, this S-Edition is likely to face competition from the likes of the Hyundai i30 N-Line, Kia Cerato GT, and the Skoda Scala Monte Carlo

Along with celebrating the 30 year milestone, this S-Edition also signals the end of the line in Australia for the current-generation Impreza.

Based on the range-topping Impreza Hatch 2.0i-S, The AWD S-Edition gets a 2.0-litre petrol engine making 115kW/196Nm. It’s worth noting that these peak figures are unchanged from the standard model.

This engine is paired exclusively with a CVT, and as the name suggests, power is sent to all four wheels.

To celebrate 30 years of the Impreza, it gets a few goodies from Subaru Australia’s parts bin including Enkei 18-inch alloy wheels, STI splitters, a sports grille, as well as an STI shift knob.

Four exterior colours are available on this special model including Pure Red, Crystal White, Crystal Black Silica and Magnetite Grey.

New-generation Impreza on the way

Subaru unveiled the next-generation Impreza at the Los Angeles Auto Show near the end of 2022.

This new Impreza is likely to land in the country sometime after the Crosstrek, which is slated to launch in April this year, though no official confirmation date has been given for our market just yet.

Like the current generation, the entry-level models are powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine with 113kW/197Nm.

The biggest news for this next-generation Impreza is the introduction of an RS model, which makes use of a 136kW/245Nm 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that can be currently found in the Forester and Outback.

Both engines are mated to a CVT, with both front and all-wheel drive Imprezas on offer in the US.

Considering that the Crosstrek (formerly the XV) will only be offered with the 2.0-litre engine, it’s likely that this new Impreza will follow in its footsteps.

Engine options from the Crosstrek are likely to carry over into the Impreza

This would also likely be the case for the petrol-electric hybrid with equal power that’s set to be launched with the Crosstrek.

On the inside, this new Impreza gets a larger 11.6-inch infotainment screen that gets both wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity.
