Kia crowns popular small EV range with all-wheel-drive flagship — but no hotted-up GT performance model
Adding appeal to the EV3 electric small SUV, Kia has announced a new GT-Line AWD trim price from $66,490 before on-road costs.
The GT-Line AWD is otherwise the same as the existing front-drive model, but with an extra rear-mounted electric motor boosting the total punch to 195kW and 385Nm which drops its 0-100km/h sprint by more than a second to 6.6sec.
Complementing the extra power, Kia has engineered larger brakes and a new Australian-tuned suspension and steering set-up bespoke to the GT-Line AWD.
With the same 81.4kWh lithium-ion battery as the GT-Line FWD, the all-paw EV3 maintains an impressive 559km WLTP driving range rating — that’s only a 4km penalty.
Sadly, though, it looks like the hotted up EV3 GT with 215kW, adaptive dampers, an even faster 0-100km/h sprint, sporty bucket seats and racy cabin detailing remains off the menu for Australia.
Kia currently sells high performance GT versions of the EV9 and EV6 but has said no to an EV5 GT, and that both EV3 and EV4 GTs would be tricky business cases.
Chasing Cars understands that, for now, EV3 GT prospects are still parked due to the added complexity it would bring to the line-up.
And anyway, the EV3 is selling well in Australia, notching up 821 deliveries last month which is a record for the BYD Atto 3, MG S5 and Renault Megane E-Tech rival.
The brand expects the new GT-Line AWD to take sales from customers who may have been considering the FWD, rather than delivering an increase in volume outright.
Standard features for the EV3 GT-Line AWD include 19-inch alloy wheels, gloss black exterior trim, sunroof, privacy glass, eight-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, power-adjust front seats with heating and ventilation, navigation, wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay and more.
For the MY27 year model update Kia has made few changes to the EV3 range, with pricing fixed in place as before. The only major tweak is that the mid-spec Earth is no-longer available with Tangerine interior trim highlights.
