New MG S6 promises to be a genuine rival to a growing list of midsize electric SUVs
MG Australia finally has an answer to the Tesla Model Y in the S6 electric SUV, which starts from a sharp $49,990 drive-away — around $14,000 less than the Tesla’s $64,180 NSW driveaway starting price.
The MG S6 will launch in a single Essence grade with a 180kW rear-wheel drive for $49,990 and costlier 266kW all-wheel drive starting from $56,990. Both vehicles claim a rapid 10-80 percent recharge time of 38 minutes, peaking at 144kW DC.
The less powerful rear-drive S6’s combined driving range is 530km (WLTP), while the more powerful all-wheel drive is rated at 485km. While unconfirmed, we expect the MG S6 to use a 77kWh battery, in line with its UK market relatives.
Both grades of MG S6 midsize electric enter a highly competitive and lucrative Australian EV market, led by the $58,900 Tesla Model Y and followed closely by the $57,900 Zeekr 7X and $54,990 BYD Sealion 7 — all prices before on-road costs.
The AWD S6 strikes an even sharper deal, drastically undercutting some AWD rivals including the $89,400 for the 461kW Model Y, $72,900 475kW 7X, and $63,990 for the 390kW Sealion 7.
Note, however, these vehicles trounce the S6 AWD in flat out 0-100km/hr acceleration, marked at 3.5, 3.8, and 4.5 seconds respectively to MG S6 AWD’s 5.1 seconds.
The MG S6 measures 4708mm long, 1912m wide and 1664mm tall, and rides on a 2835mm wheelbase, making it similar in size to the fresh-faced 2026 Mazda CX-5. It is built on MG’s Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), notably used in the smaller MG4 and MG S5.
Outside, the MG S6 is very similar in appearance to its smaller MG S5 counterpart, featuring slim headlights, pronounced front air intakes, and a body-width rear tail-light. It additionally sports 20-inch alloy wheels and a subtle boot spoiler.
Inside, the MG S6 features a 12.8-inch infotainment touch-screen, 10.25 digital instrument cluster, 50kW wireless charger, a heads-up display, 11-speaker sound system, and suede-cloth interior trim.
Both the front and rear seats are upholstered in vegan leather, with seat heating and ventilation for the front row and outboard seat heating in the rear. Boot space is quoted at 581 litres, expanding to 1690L with the rear seats folded. A 67-litre frunk complements storage.
All prices listed are drive-away.
