Essentially an upmarket Chery Tiggo 4, the Jaecoo J5 gains a turbocharged petrol option to serve alongside its existing electric offering
Omoda-Jaecoo has priced its petrol-powered J5 small SUV from $25,990 driveaway ahead of its imminent May debut.
The internal-combustion (ICE) J5 range kicks off with the Track at the aforementioned price, while the top-spec Summit commands $29,990 D/A. Both models join the existing J5 EV Summit, which is built on the same modular platform and starts from $36,990 drive-away.
The J5 intends to place in a segment above its close relative, the Chery Tiggo 4, which starts from $23,990 drive-away – $2000 less than the premium Jaecoo. Both vehicles utilise an identical 108kW/210Nm petrol turbo ‘four, CVT automatic, and front-drive powertrain.
But where the cut-price Tiggo rivals equally competitive Chinese products like the $22,990 drive-away MG ZS and $23,990 Haval Jolion, Jaecoo hopes to move its buyership upstream to capitalise on the slightly more premium, legacy small SUV market.
It will predominantly target rivals like the Mazda CX-3 ($32,990 D/A), Hyundai Kona ($33,700 before on-road costs), and Toyota Yaris Cross ($31,790 before on-roads), beating out its rivals by over $5000.
Unlike its rivals, however, the J5 ICE will not offer all-wheel drive or plugless hybrid power – for now. A Chery–derived ‘CSH’ series parallel hybrid system has been confirmed for the third quarter of this year.
The entry-level J5 Track offers the following standard equipment:
Stepping into the range-topping Summit adds or replaces the following features:
The Jaecoo J5 ICE measures 4380mm long, 1860 wide, and 1650mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2620mm. It is nearly identical in size to the Chery Tiggo 4, and offers a boot space volume of 480-litres.
The J5’s 108kW front-drive powertrain claims a higher than average combined fuel consumption of 7.5L/100km – nearly identical to that claimed by the circa-2.5 tonne Toyota LandCruiser Prado large off-road SUV, which itself claims 7.6L/100km, though using diesel fuel.
The forthcoming plugless hybrid J5 is likely to claim a reduced combined fuel consumption of circa-5.4L/100km, using the Tiggo 4 as a guide.
All prices listed are drive-away unless stated otherwise.
