With 800-volt architecture and tough, GT coupe-style looks, totally new C-Class Electric combines newfound elegance with premium tech and big performance
Mercedes-Benz Australia has revealed the pricing of its introductory C-Class Electric variant, the 360kW C400 4Matic sedan, priced from $105,700 before on-road costs.
Completely unrelated to the combustion-engined W206 C-Class sedan (which will remain on sale with multiple powertrains), the C-Class Electric is underpinned by Mercedes-Benz’s all-new EA-M platform which introduces 800-volt architecture supporting ultra-fast DC charging up to 330kW for a 10-80-percent boost in 22 minutes.
Standard equipment highlights include a ‘glass-look’ illuminated grille with three-pointed-star ‘Digital Light’ headlamp beams and 1050 illuminated dots, plus a ‘Sky Control’ panoramic glass roof featuring nine individually adjustable segments to control the in-cabin lighting intensity.
AMG Line and Night Packages are both standard in Australia, combining more aggressive body styling with dark exterior accents and the illuminated grille and front apron in dark chrome. Wheels are 20-inch multi-spoke AMG alloys, while metallic paint and dark window tinting are standard.
Inside, the C400 4Matic boasts a standard MBUX Superscreen spanning the entire dashboard width, including a 10.25-inch driver display, 14.0-inch centre touchscreen and 14.0-inch passenger display, plus Burmester 3D surround-sound audio.
The dashboard, doors, and AMG Line sports seats are trimmed in Artico artificial leather while the centre console features open-pore fineline birch wood trim.
The C400 4Matic’s powertrain consists of a 94kWh (useable) battery and dual electric motors for total system outputs of 360kW and 800Nm. Top speed is 210km/h while the acceleration claim is 0-100km/h in 4.0 seconds.
An optional Agility and Comfort Package ($5200) adds Airmatic adaptive air suspension and four-wheel steering, while a Luxury Package ($8200) brings heated/cooled front seats and heated rear seat, an illuminated star pattern for the panoramic glass roof at night, and a 99.3cm MBUX Hyperscreen with a seamlessly blended display across the entire dash.
Size wise, the C-Class Electric rides on a long 2962mm wheelbase, spans 4883mm from nose to tail, and offers 12mm more front legroom, 22mm more front headroom and 11mm more rear headroom than a regular W206 C-Class sedan. Boot space is 470 litres and there’s also a 101-litre frunk.
When fitted with the smallest (18-inch) wheels on offer in Europe, Mercedes-Benz claims a drag coefficient of just 0.22.
The Mercedes-Benz C400 4Matic Electric will go on sale in Australian dealerships on October 20.
