New C5 plugless hybrid from Chery lobs at a competitive price, some $5000 beneath mainstream rivals from Korea and Japan
Chery Australia has today announced a new, series-parallel hybrid drivetrain for its C5 small SUV, intended to bridge the gap between the existing Chery C5 petrol and E5 full EV.
Initially, the hybrid drivetrain will span two variants – Urban and Ultimate – with pricing from $31,990 and $34,990 drive-away, respectively. The two-strong grade walk mirrors the C5 petrol, itself priced from $27,990 and $32,990 drive-away for each grade of the same name.
The C5 Hybrid gives Chery Group yet another small SUV counterpoint to the segment leading Hyundai Kona Hybrid ($36,950 before on-road costs) and evergreen Toyota Corolla Cross ($37,440). It joins the ranks of the cut-price $29,990 drive-away Chery Tiggo 4 Hybrid and forthcoming Jaecoo 5 Hybrid.
All three cars share an identical, ten-year-old T1X modular platform.
The C5’s hybrid drivetrain employs a front-driven 165kW / 295Nm 1.5-litre turbo ‘four coupled with a single reduction gear hybrid transmission, electric motor, and high voltage battery. The system supports limited EV driving as well as regenerative braking, claiming a combined consumption of 4.9L/100km (no testing standard was supplied with this figure).
Both inside and out, the C5 Hybrid is identical to the C5 petrol, aside from new-look alloy wheels. Its signature crosshatched grille and streamlined-look body originally debuted in the Australian market three years ago as the Chery Omoda 5.
Likewise, the C5’s equipment list for both grades mirrors the petrol. Highlight features for the base model Urban include:
While stepping into the Ultimate grants:
All grades of C5, irrespective of powertrain, are available to order now, as is the closely related E5 dedicated electric small SUV.
All prices listed are drive-away
