Mahindra has pulled the covers off its latest-generation midsize pick-up product while also revealing its name for the first time. Dubbed the Lifestyler for Australia — and the Scorpio Lifestyler in India — the ute is expected to launch in April 2027.
The Indian firm, which occupies a large slice of the light commercial vehicles segment in its home market, chose to showcase only the badge and visual appearance of the Lifestyler at the model’s world premiere in Mumbai overnight – attended by Chasing Cars.
Nearly all key technical details remain firmly under wraps until closer to launch including the precise size, platform, powertrain, key weights and grade structure.

That makes it tough to evaluate precisely where the Lifestyler will sit in the market, but Mahindra executives have indicated that it will slot in between the most affordable Chinese options and legacy utes like the Ranger, HiLux, D-Max and Triton in Australia.
Mahindra showed only images of the Lifestyler’s interior today, which is based around a prominent vertically orientated touchscreen with physical controls at the bottom for climate. All prototype examples were locked up tight.
What was disclosed was an Indian-market starting price of 1,979,000 rupees ($29,200 AUD), and an entry point of about $40,000 for Australia would not be out of the question.

Possible high towing and GCM rating will see Lifestyle target big-name rivals
Chasing Cars understands that a 6300kg gross combination mass (GCM) figure may apply to the upgraded body-on-frame platform that underpins the Lifestyler. It is also believed that 3500kg towing may have been targeted.
The Lifestyler is the production version of Mahindra’s 2023 Global Pik Up concept and uses what Mahindra dubs a ‘next-generation’ ladder frame.
Mahindra previously told Chasing Cars that the new ute would use an upgraded version of the company’s existing 2.2-litre mHawk turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine that produces 128kW/400Nm in the body-on-frame Scorpio four-wheel-drive model.

Some markets will have the choice of a six-speed manual transmission but it is believed that Australian buyers will only be offered a six-speed automatic produced by Aisin.
Four versions of the Lifestyler were shown to Indian, Australian and South African media in Mumbai: the Indian-market Valley, Reef and Trail models and a more subtle but unlabelled high-tier spec representative of one Australian variant.
The company says the Lifestyler has targeted “playload” rather than just “payload” and says it is designed to combine workhorse capability with comfort and refinement levels well beyond any pick-up Mahindra has produced in the past.
Australia central to the project with validation about to begin
Speaking with Chasing Cars at the Lifestyler reveal event, Mahindra head of international operations Sachin Arolkar said hitting the sweet spot between work utes and premium pick-ups had been central to the project.
“The idea is that this is an ideal vehicle which combines both elements of what the customer is looking at—they don’t need to decide between a workhorse and a lifestyle,” said Arolkar.

The international markets boss indicated that Mahindra does not intend to fight the growing field of affordable Chinese utes on a price basis.
Asked whether Mahindra had focused its attention on value contenders like the GWM Cannon and BYD Shark 6, or legacy options like the Ranger and HiLux, Arolkar said Mahindra had “benchmarked with the best”.
The Australian market has rated highly in Mahindra’s priorities during the development phase and will also influence the final engineering specification.
The Lifestyler will now undergo six to nine months of Australian validation testing. Arolkar confirmed that this process can still result in hardware changes.
Asked whether something as specific as the Lifestyler gaining a bespoke Australian shock absorber remained possible, he replied: “Absolutely.”
The validation work will be particularly important as Mahindra has not disclosed whether the Lifestyler will meet the 3500kg braked towing and roughly one-tonne payload benchmarks that have become table stakes in the serious ute market.
A presentation shown at the Lifestyler reveal event stated that the Australian market would accept no compromise on capability.
Five-star ANCAP commitment remains but hybrid option not resolved
Electrified options remain an open question for the Lifestyler. Mahindra cut a planned battery electric version in 2025 and despite having publicly mulled a hybrid powertrain option, one will not be ready at or near launch.
The expected diesel engine in the Lifestyler is set to emit around 190g/km of CO2, being near current New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) limits and above headline targets in future years.
Arolkar said that Mahindra plans to balance its obligations under NVES by balancing emissions across its wider Australian portfolio including by introducing separate electric vehicles.
However, Mahindra says it is watching hybrid ute developments in Australia and remains open to a plug-in hybrid or extended-range hybrid powertrain for the Lifestyler.
Mahindra is also specifically targeting a five-star ANCAP crash and safety result for the Lifestyler, though no details were given at today’s announcement in relation to specific features that would assist in meeting tough 2026-2028 protocols.
