Volkswagen recreates Kombi heritage with California Beach and Multivan Cruise vans

Volkswagen this week announced that they will be bringing two new high-specification vans to Australia in the last months of 2020. The incoming T6.1 update to the brand’s familiar Transporter, Multivan and California range will include two Beach and Cruise variants designed to cater for the leisure road travel crowd.

Thirty examples of the 2021 California Beach and 2021 Multivan Cruise vans will be brought to Australia. Both vans make use of Volkswagen’s 110kW TDI340 four-cylinder diesel engine, equipped with a seven-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox.

The $94,990 California Beach caters for the camping crowd, sporting a highly configurable interior underneath fetching two-tone paint outside, available in white/copper, white/grey, and white/green combinations. The California’s roof pops up via an automated electro-hydraulic system, while the doors on both sides are power-operated, as is the tailgate.

The vans sport an updated interior in line with the brand’s passenger cars.

The California is designed as five-seater, with the front seats swivelling while the middle bench reclines with a bed extension function. Other amenities inside include an eight-inch touchscreen with navigation and a digital driver display, plus a six speaker stereo.

The more affordable $73,990 Multivan Cruise brings Kombi vibes back to the people mover market, with three differing two-tone colours available: silver/red, silver/grey, and silver/blue. Outside, you’ll notice the 18-inch alloys and all-round LED lighting.

Inside, the seating is upholstered in Volkswagen’s soft Art Velour trim while the front pews are heated. A nine-inch touchscreen is included, sporting inbuilt navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay, while the driver has use of a digital cockpit.

The 30 examples of each van coming to Australia will be sold online from 24 June.
