2027 Xpeng L03: Chinese electric coupe-crossover priced from $41,900 , undercutting Geely EX5 and BYD Atto 3

Chinese EV manufacturer Xpeng has detailed its “AI SUV coupe”, the L03, for Australia ahead of an expected launch in the fourth quarter of the year.

The headline news is a range-extender model, a very popular technology in China that’s been largely absent from Australia. The engine in the L03’s PowerX model is solely a generator, and never drives the wheels.

The L03 starts at $41,900 before on-road costs for either the RWD Standard Range or the PowerX Long Range. 

This is exactly $90 cheaper than all three of its closest rivals. The Geely EX5 and the BYD Atto 3, which Xpeng Australia name-checked as competitors, are both $41,990 before on-roads. The closest thing to the L03 in shape and size, the petrol-only Renault Arkana, is also $41,990 before on-roads.

There are two variants above the RWD Standard Range and the PowerX: the RWD Long Range ($46,900 before on-roads) and the AWD Performance Ultra ($53,900 before on-roads)

Xpeng Australia has yet to publish Australian specifications in detail. Chasing Cars understands the L03 uses a 400-volt platform, not the costlier 800V architecture in other Australian-market Xpengs, though its claimed 149kW DC charging peak remains serviceable.

In Europe, Car News China reports the RWD Standard Range has a 58.3kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery good for 445km of range (WLTP), driving a 180kW motor. 

The Long Range’s 71.2kWh battery extends this to 520km (WLTP), while the AWD Performance mates the bigger battery with dual motors for a combined 285kW, but reduced range of 440km (WLTP).

The PowerX pairs a 37.3kWh battery with a 63kW petrol engine that can charge the battery if it runs low. Xpeng calls it the Kunpeng Super Electric System.

As is customary with Chinese brands, technology is plentiful. The L03 includes Xpeng’s Xpilot driver assistance tech, encompassing adaptive cruise control, lane centring, traffic sign recognition and “intelligent parking assistance”. Front and rear crossing-traffic alerts and 360-degree cameras are also standard.

Inside, the voice control is designed to respond to normal speech rather than exacting commands. Also thrown in is ambient lighting with 256 (!) colours, heated and ventilated front seats, and a glass roof.

Xpeng Australia opens pre-orders for the L03 from today –  Thursday, 24 September. Exact delivery timing and further specs are TBA, but Australian arrivals are expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.
