Stylish new Seltos hybrid priced for Oz; still undercuts rivals, narrowly

Kia has announced pricing for the all-new, hybrid-only Seltos ahead of its arrival in showrooms in late October.

The small SUV will arrive in six variants: S, S with Safety Pack, Sport, Sport+, and GT-Line with the latter also available in AWD. Kia has yet to detail equipment levels.

Driveaway prices are up $4670 for the S and significantly across the board, with the line-up spanning $39,990 to $55,490 driveaway.

Explaining this price hike is a new platform, much-improved technology and the loss of the old 2.0-litre petrol engine as a price-leader.

The Seltos is competitive with the Hyundai Kona and Toyota Corolla Cross — a hybrid Kona is around $41,000 driveaway and the hybrid-only Corolla Cross starts at about $41,500 on the road.

The new hybrid mates a 1.6L naturally aspirated petrol engine to an electric motor via a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Australian power and consumption figures are yet to be confirmed. Korean market cars produce 113kW in front-wheel drive guise, with the AWD bumping that to 133kW.

The GT-Line AWD brings something new to Australian Kias  — power to the back wheels comes from an electric motor, not a mechanical connection to the engine and gearbox. It’s a similar approach Toyota takes for all-wheel drive RAV4s.

The Seltos will receive Kia Australia’s highly-regarded chassis and suspension localisation.
