Toyota Urban SUV concept for Europe could be the electric Yaris Cross

The Urban SUV is set for a release in 2024 in Europe, but something similar could one day come to Australia

Toyota Europe has announced a new electric compact model called the Urban SUV that is set to debut in production form during 2024.

The Urban SUV is part of a six-model-strong lineup for Europe, but a future production model could come to markets like Australia one day.

Toyota has confirmed that both front- and all-wheel drive configurations will be available from launch.

The Japanese automaker plans to introduce six electric models in Europe by 2026 as the brand works to make a significant turnaround on its electrification plans.

What platform will the Urban SUV ride on?

Toyota has already announced that it will bring a third-generation EV platform to market around 2026, which means that the Urban SUV is likely to ride upon the existing E-TNGA platform that also underpins the BZ4X midsize SUV

The third-generation platform that will come later will form the basis for the majority of Toyota EV products going forward.

Several concepts spun off this platform have been shown to the public already, including a small sports car and a range of SUVs.

During the recent Japan Mobility Show, Chasing Cars reported on the latest EV concepts, paying particular attention to the Land Cruiser SE concept, as well as the FT-3e electric SUV.

As for Australia, the Toyota BZ4X – Toyota’s first EV for our market – is still yet to launch, but should be in local showrooms in February 2024.
