All-wheel drive and even faster charging boost Xpeng G6’s appeal as brand gears up to launch more models
Fresh from bringing Australian distribution in-house, Xpeng has announced updates to its G6 ‘ultra smart coupe SUV’, headlined by the addition of all-wheel-drive to the Australian line-up.
The entry point is still a standard range RWD (480km WLTP, $51,800) then you move up through Long Range RWD (525km WLTP, $56,800), both of which are impressively $3000 less than before.
Capping the range is the Xpeng G6 Performance AWD for $63,800, while a Black Edition costs $66,800, all prices listed before on-road costs.
For the $3000 upcharge, the Black Edition features black 20-inch alloy wheels, black brake calipers and a ‘smoked-black’ finish for the badges, front fender trims, front cameras and front lights.
Heated, ventilated and massaging seats are fitted to the mid-spec LR RWD and Xpeng says nappa leather — as opposed to standard vinyl — is available, though is not clear on which grade.
Otherwise, standard equipment is unchanged. All Xpeng G6s have an 800-volt silicon carbide electrical architecture – impressive and rare for the price – and the capacity for vehicle-to-load (V2L) charging up to 6kW.
The rear-drive base model develops 185kW and 440Nm from a single rear motor and the Long Range boosts power to 218kW (+8kW more than previously). It also gets a slightly smaller 80.8kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack.
Xpeng’s new AWD Performance trim adds a second motor on the front axle for greater purchase and extra punch, boosting outputs to 358kW and 660Nm. The 0-100km/h sprint falls to 4.1 seconds.
Bolder claims are DC charging at up to 451kW on the Long Range variant, and 10% to 80% charging in as little as 12 minutes in ideal conditions; Chasing Cars’ experience with early G6s suggests this is more than hot air.
For reference, most key rivals are slower to charge, including the Tesla Model Y (24min) and Skoda Enyaq (28min). Even the powerful Zeekr 7X is slower, at 13min.
Interior technology – the be-all and end-all of all Chinese EVs – carries over mostly unchanged:
● 15.6-inch central touchscreen
● 10.25-inch digital driver display
● 18-speaker audio system
● Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
● Over-the-air software updates
● Dual wireless phone charging
● Heated and ventilated front seats
Dimensions are unchanged: 4.8m long, 1.9m wide and 1.7m tall, with an unladen weight figure of 2,025kg.
Xpeng has also revised its warranty: seven years and unlimited kilometres for private owners, plus a battery warranty of eight years and 160,000km.
While this is better than the standard five-year/120,000km warranty Xpeng offered on the G6, early adopters under TrueEV’s distributorship were treated to a 10-year/220,000km guarantee.
Moving forward, Xpeng ANZ will take servicing (every 12 months or 20,000km) and dealerships in-house with TrueEV having commenced litigation against the Chinese company.
The updated G6 will arrive in showrooms before the month is out, and reservations for the car are open now.
The new G6 is the first in Xpeng’s ambitious expansion plans, which include at least three new models and the ability to rival Tesla’s full-self driving (supervised) assistance suite.
