All new Nissan product strategy sees new-generations of X-Trail ePower and Juke EV are ready to roll-out to global markets
Nissan has today revealed a new generation of X-Trail and an all-new Juke EV at a global reveal event in Tokyo.
The fifth-generation X-Trail is set to arrive in Australia in late 2027, and is the latest volume-selling midsized Japanese SUV to receive a new generation, following in the footsteps of the Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester and Mazda CX-5.
Meanwhile, the electric Nissan Juke is under consideration for Australia, and will contend globally with small electric SUVs like the Kia EV3, MG4 Urban and Hyundai Kona Electric. The revitalisation of the Juke nameplate comes just weeks after its combustion variant was axed locally.
In a similar trend to that of its rivals, it appears that the new X-Trail will be offered in hybrid-only guise, dropping Nissan’s faithful petrol-only 135kW/244Nm 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder and CVT base driveline.
In its stead is a revised ‘ePower’ plugless hybrid drivetrain, likely served in both front-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations. Power outputs, combined fuel economy and servicing intervals remain unconfirmed for now.
The news follows just weeks after the debut of a price-busting, front-driven X-Trail ePower – rumoured to start in the low $40k bracket – which marks the first time Nissan has offered a plugless hybrid X-Trail without all-wheel drive.
There’s little doubt this decision was influenced by Toyota’s $45,990 before on-road costs sixth-generation ‘GX’ RAV4 hybrid front-driver.
Nissan’s newfound FWD configuration will likely open the fifth-generation X-Trail’s model range, and is expected to be priced competitively with the RAV4.
Little information has been confirmed surrounding the third generation Juke. Expect the forthcoming small electric SUV to place at the bottom of Nissan’s EV totem pole, below the forthcoming Leaf and $55,840 Ariya.
It will likely feature a similar version of the Leaf’s drivetrain, which consists of a 52 kWh battery, 130kW/345Nm front electric motor, to achieve a range of around 436 km WLTP.
Also confirmed for global markets is a new ‘Xterra’ midsized ute for the US, likely based on the Nissan-Dongfeng Frontier Pro platform, and a next-generation Nissan Skyline, so far confirmed solely for the Japanese market.
Both of these highly anticipated models remain unconfirmed for Australia.
