Latest electric car from Leapmotor won’t be an SUV. New B05 is a rear-driven hatchback with sharp pricing and a distinct minimalist look
Leapmotor has confirmed its Toyota Corolla-sized B05 electric hatchback will launch in Australia by the end of August.
The latest in an expanding Leapmotor model range, the B05 will launch in two grades, starting from $35,888 before on-road costs for the base-model Style or $39,888 for the long-ranged Design LR. Critically, both cars are rear-wheel drive and develop 160kW / 240Nm.
Both B05 variants benefit from launch offers of $35,990 and $39,990 drive-away (DA) respectively until 30 September. The discount solely applies to Lightning Yellow-coloured vehicles.
The B05 arrives as a cut-priced rival to the highly regarded $39,990 drive-away MG4 and sedan-bodied $54,900 before on-roads Tesla Model 3. Alternate front-drive competitors include the $29,990 BYD Dolphin, $31,990 (DA) MG4 EV Urban and the outgoing $35,990 (DA) GWM Ora.
It will be the third vehicle offered locally by the Chinese-Stellantis joint-venture brand, joining the B10 small SUV and C10 medium SUV. Both of the B05’s stablemates offer plug-in hybrid and dedicated electric powertrains, with pricing from $37,888 and $43,888 respectively.
The base-grade B05 Style features a 56.2kWh battery capable of travelling up to 401km (WLTP). It claims to DC recharge from 30 to 80 percent in 16 minutes, though no DC peak has been provided.
The range-topping Design features a larger 67.1kWh battery claiming 482km of driving range (WLTP). It can DC recharge from 30 to 80 percent in 18 minutes, says Leapmotor, with a charging peak of 174kW.
Both B05 grades share their 160kW/240Nm output, 56.2kWh and 67.1kWh battery sizes, and Leap 3.5 EV platform with the B10 medium SUV. That car starts from $37,888 and $40,888 before on-roads respectively for equivalent grades of the same name.
The Leapmotor B05 measures 4430mm long, 1880mm wide, and 1665mm tall, driving on a 2735mm wheelbase. It is most similar in size to the Toyota Corolla Hatch, though the B05’s square proportions lead to a 200mm taller roofline.
Indeed, the B05 is almost wagon-ish in shape, with square proportions and a minimalist design language to match its stablemates. At the front, two LED headlights are adjoined by a strip of clear plastic, while a body-wide LED lightbar garnishes the rear.
Exterior features for the B05 Style include 19-inch alloy wheels, frameless door glass, rear parking sensors, and flush-fit door handles. The Design gains power-folding mirrors, a panoramic sunroof, and rain-sensing wipers.
Inside, the Style features an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, 14.6-inch multimedia touchscreen, a wireless device charger and 360 degree camera.
Stepping into the Design grants electronic-adjusting heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, rear window tinting and 12-speaker audio system. It is unclear how many speakers the base model Style features.
Orders are open now for both grades of B05, with initial deliveries slated for the end of August.
All prices listed are before on-road costs.
