Latest V8 AMG SUVs boast huge equipment lists, aggressive styling and stonking outputs despite new, stricter emissions standards
Mercedes-AMG has confirmed a new generation of V8-powered GLE and GLS models will debut in Australia, proudly displaying the iconic ‘63’ model designation.
Pricing is yet to be confirmed, though is expected to exceed the current $273,300 and $310,300 entry points for the GLE and GLS respectively. Both vehicles remain within the premium performance SUV market as rivals to the $253,800 BMW X6 M and $230,900 Audi RS Q8. All prices shown are before on-road costs.
Both the forthcoming GLE and GLS will be built upon the platform of their predecessors, which debuted in 2020. AMG claims the platform has seen ‘heavy revisions’ with updates to both the drivetrain and equipment list.
In range topping 63 guise, both vehicles offer an unchanged 450kW and 850Nm, produced by an updated ‘M117 Evo’ 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 now utilising a flat-plane crankshaft. This is a hugely notable mechanical change best known for its application in the AMG GT.
Flat-plane cranks are best known for their decreased rotational mass compared to more conventional cross-plane crankshafts.
Without the need for traditional counterweights, flat-plane engines support higher rev-limits and grant an improved throttle response – as well as a distinct, exotic sound. Other, smaller changes to the M117 Evo include improvements to the intake cam, fuel injection system and exhaust.
What remains presently unclear is if the revised, flat-plane M117’s power figure is combined with, or independent to, Benz’s 48-volt starter-generator mild-hybrid system, which reportedly adds an additional 16kW and 250Nm in ‘short bursts’.
In any case, the M117 Evo V8 + MHEV is matched to a ‘9G-Tronic’ nine-speed conventional automatic transmission and AMG’s own ‘4MATIC+’ torque-variable all-wheel drive system. All in, the system can shunt the circa 2.5-tonne ‘Benz from 0-100km/h in 3.9 seconds (GLE63) – 0.1 seconds slower than its predecessor (GLS claims 4.2 seconds).
Outside of the newly revised, flat-plane drivetrain, the new GLE and GLS 63 AMGs see a string of midlife improvements, starting with a re-designed front clip – sporting LED headlamps, large air intakes, and a new grille insert – and re-designed rear clip, which wears a re-styled diffuser.
AMG claims it has also improved the 63’s exhaust system, which sports variable valves to adjust overall exhaust volume, and twin tailpipes.
Other features found on both 63 models include 48-volt adaptive air suspension with adaptive damping, electronic locking rear differential, 22-inch wheels (GLS wears 23 inches), and updated Nappa leather interior featuring a dashboard-wide, triple 12.3-inch display.
More information on Mercedes-AMG’s GLE and GLS 63 models, including pricing and further specifications, will be revealed closer to both model’s launch.
