GWM Cannon Hi4-T PHEV 2027: entry-level plug-in hybrid dual-cab debuts at $47,990 driveaway for ABN holders

GWM has announced launch pricing of its new entry-level plug-in hybrid (PHEV) dual-cab ute – the Cannon Hi4-T – which will be offered in two trim levels (Lux and Ultra), starting at $47,990 driveaway for ABN holders or $48,990 driveaway for private buyers, including bonus launch offers that will last until October 31.

These offers include either a $2000 driveaway bonus or a $2000 fuel card, meaning the Cannon Hi4-T Lux list price for private buyers will be $50,990 driveaway from November.

The more highly specified Hi4-T Ultra starts at $51,990 driveaway for ABN holders or $52,990 driveaway for private buyers, each including launch bonuses, or $54,990 driveaway for private buyers once the offers finish.

This means that when the Cannon Hi4-T arrives in mid-October it will make GWM the only manufacturer in Australia offering two different plug-in hybrid ute models (new Cannon PHEV and larger Cannon Alpha PHEV).

Combining a 180kW/380Nm 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine with a 130kW/495Nm electric motor and a 33.1kWh battery, the Cannon PHEV offers combined outputs of 310kW and 750Nm, transferring drive via a nine-speed hybrid automatic transmission. GWM says the PHEV is robust enough to match the diesel’s 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity.

While the Cannon Hi4-T offers a degree of electrification and around 90km of WLTP electric range (or 115km when measured using the less realistic NEDC testing cycle), it remains a fully mechanical body-on-frame 4WD ute with a low-range transfer case, an electronic rear differential lock, and drive modes that include Sand, Mud, Snow and Towing.

With kerb weights of 2585kg, both Cannon PHEV variants have a GVM of 3420kg, a payload of 835kg, a downball weight of 350kg, minimum ground clearance of 232mm and a wading depth of 500mm.

Based on its 33.1kWh battery size and 75-litre fuel tank capacity, GWM claims a combined range of up to 1037km, though this is according to the NEDC measurement. Official combined fuel consumption is 2.4L/100km.

With a maximum DC charge capability of 110kW, the Cannon Hi4-T’s battery can go from 30-80 percent charge in 18 minutes. The electrified Cannon also gets vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality with 230V power outlets in the tub providing up to 6kW of discharge power.

Both Cannon Hi4-T variants feature a black exterior treatment to align them with the larger Cannon Alpha PHEV, including a black sports bar, matte black front grille, door handles and mirror caps, black side steps, and black 18-inch alloy wheels.

The Cannon Hi4-T will also be the first GWM vehicle in Australia to debut much-needed new Coffee OS software for its in-cabin technology, headlined by a large 15.6-inch full-colour touchscreen.

The top-spec Ultra uniquely scores a sunroof, leather-accented upholstery (instead of vinyl), heated and ventilated electric front seats (6-way driver, 4-way passenger), heated steering wheel, rear centre armrest, one-touch windows, rear privacy glass, a dash-cam USB port, 360-degree surround-view monitor and front parking sensors. 

GWM says the Cannon Hi4-T PHEV dual-cab ute will start arriving in dealerships from mid-October, though customer orders have already started.
