New GR Yaris GTS Aero Performance Package adds wings and a price hike
Rally cars and hood scoops have long been a holy matrimony in motorsport, pioneered by rally icons like the Subaru WRX and Mitsubishi’s Lancer Evolution. However, in recent times, the lairy charm of the humble hood scoop has been ditched for more sophisticated aero.
Now, Toyota is giving GR Yaris fans the chance to fit the hood scoop of yesteryear onto its flagship GR Yaris GTS model, albeit a touch more tame compared to the bug-catcher found on its ST185 Celica GT4 relative (certainly more of an ST205 look, if you ask us).
The scoop is just one component of a new Aero Performance Package, which Toyota says will further improve grip, braking performance and engine cooling when optioned with the GTS variants’ forged wheels, enhanced suspension and twin Torsen limited slip differentials.
In fact, the Aero Performance Package will only be available as an option for the flagship GR Yaris GTS trim, meaning entry grade GT models miss out for now. The package comes at a $4500 premium, pushing the automatic GTS Aero past $70,000 drive-away.
At $67,490, the plucky ‘tiny but mighty’ GR Yaris GTS automatic starts to contend with Toyota’s own $67,990 GR Corolla GTS manual, as well as Subaru’s catchily named WRX tS Spec B, which starts at $61,490. Prices shown are before on-road costs.
All GR Yaris models, regardless of variant or transmission, produce a peak output of 221kW and 400Nm.
Apart from the bonnet-mounted centerpiece, the Aero Package also adds a large adjustable rear spoiler (motorsports engineers sold separately), front fender ducts to improve the expulsion of dirty air, and a revised underbody cover for better aerodynamics.
Toyota credits the Japanese Super Taikyu racing series for the development of two additional features, which were implemented with direction from professional driver Kazuya Oshima, who has held a motorsports relationship with Toyota since 2005.
His inputs helped to develop a front lip spoiler which prevents unwanted lift, as well as air ducts on the rear bumper, again introduced to expel excessive trapped air at speed — recently, a Super Taikyu GR Yaris had its rear bumper detach from intensive air pressure.
