Thousands of BYD Shark 6 models have been recalled to stop their spare wheels from potentially falling off.
Issued yesterday by the federal Department of Transportation, the recall is for all variants of Shark 6 built between its Australian launch in 2024 to now.

Affecting 32,009 cars, the recall impacts the great majority of BYD Shark 6s sold in Australia to date.
The Shark 6’s spare wheel is mounted, in a typical ute fashion, under the tray with a lifter assembly. According to the government notice, the assembly has a manufacturing defect that puts excessive strain on the spare wheel’s support cable, increasing the odds of it snapping if the spare wheel is positioned incorrectly or not tightly enough.
If this cable snaps, the spare wheel will likely fall out. Both BYD itself and the formal government notice state this exposes other motorists to injury or even death.
All affected Shark 6 owners must contact BYD and/or their local BYD dealership, if they’ve not been contacted already, to arrange a repair free of charge. In the meantime, owners are asked to consult the owners’ manual and take the spare wheel out of the ute.
Though BYD estimates the fix itself takes half an hour, the company cautions customers that since mechanics can only work so fast, it may not be an in-and-out job as customers wait their turn.
If clarify whether your Shark is affected, consult the official government website or BYD’s own website for information specific to your ute.
