The Grenadier ute will be called the Quartermaster – and it’s locked in for Australian sales. The main question is when it’ll arrive.

Ineos has forged the Quartermaster moniker for its eagerly anticipated go-anywhere Grenadier ute model ahead of its official public debut at the Goodwood festival of Speed next month, as well as its arrival in Australian showrooms.

The iconic British automotive extravaganza will also provide the stage for the company’s hydrogen fuel-cell powered Grenadier prototype, offering a glimpse at the company’s future-focused zero emissions models to come.

Taking the mechanicals of the segment-disrupting Grenadier as its basis, the now-confirmed Quartermaster dual-cab will introduce a new one-tonne offering into Australia’s fearsomely competitive market with a focus on outright all-terrain ability.

While Ineos has now confirmed the Quartermaster will be offered for local sale alongside its SUV sibling, it is not yet ready to confirm an arrival date.

That said, a release early in 2024 would be a reasonable estimate for launch but, as previous supply issues upset the rival of the Grenadier foray, timing may still be flexible at this stage.

The debut at Goodwood on the Thursday July 13 coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Goodwood Festival of Speed as well as the same anniversary for the company’s Belstaff Trialmaster jacket which is favoured by two-wheeled enthusiasts as well as lending its name to a Grenadier variant.

Both the Quartermaster and FCEV Grenadier SUV will make a pass of the esteemed Goodwood hillclimb, which is fast becoming the dynamic showcase favoured by the world’s automotive manufacturers in preference over static displays of the more traditional motor show.

More details regarding the exact arrival time of the Quartermaster and its mechanical and specification details will coincide with its public unveiling, but it’s expected to share the options of BMW-supplied straight-six petrol and diesel powertrain options, along with a choice of two variants – Trialmaster, Fieldmaster and a more utilitarian entry option.

The pioneering Grenadier SUV has already gained praise and acclaim for its tough construction and off-road ability and its maker says both the chopped-top Quartermaster and hydrogen fuel-cell versions continue the company mantra.

According to Ineos, the FCEV ‘technology demonstrator’ “will show how well-suited the zero emissions technology is for a future long-range 4X4 off-roader”.

Ineos has not yet confirmed if it intends to push fuel-cell drivetrains all the way through development to a production model stage but it has gone on record with battery-electric power with at least one EV off-roader in the pipeline.

Goodwood attendees will not just be able to watch the Grenadier hit the hill each day at the festival but can get intimately acquainted with the petrol and diesel SUV versions at a drive experience on the neighbouring Halnaker Chalkpit 4×4 course.
