Hyundai Palisade 2023: hybrid version ruled out due to incoming Ioniq 7 all-electric SUV

Hyundai Australia has confirmed that a hybrid version of the Palisade is not likely as the upcoming Ioniq 7 will be “the next electrified Hyundai SUV”

Hyundai Australia has ruled out the possibilities of a hybrid Palisade SUV and will instead focus on the fully electric Ioniq 7 as the next electrified SUV for the brand.

Hyundai Australia’s public relations senior manager Guido Schenken said that there would not be a hybrid version of the current Palisade.

“Electrification is not for Palisade in this generation,” Schenken said.

However, Hyundai did mention that it is evaluating hybrids for every model. With the recent successes of the Ioniq 5 electric car and positive feedback surrounding the new Ioniq 6 electric sedan, Hyundai is clearly leaning towards an increasingly electrified future.

What currently powers the Hyundai Palisade?

The updated 2023 Hyundai Palisade range is powered by either a 3.8-litre V6 petrol engine or a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine.

The petrol V6 option produces total outputs of 217kW/355Nm and is mated to a eight-speed automatic transmission. Combined claimed fuel economy for the V6 is 10.7L/100km.

The smaller-displacement 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine makes less power, at 147kW, but produces more torque – 440Nm. This smaller unit is more frugal when it comes to fuel use, achieving a claimed combined economy of 7.3L/100km.

What could a hybrid Palisade be like?

If Hyundai was to backflip on its stance, the Palisade could adopt the technology available in the current, overseas-market Santa Fe. In this model, which is available in markets such as the UK, a Smartstream 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder has been available since 2020 with either a hybrid or plug-in hybrid set-up, producing combined outputs of 195kW/350Nm in the latter guise.

Under the skin of the European-specific Hyundai Santa Fe lies a 13.8kWh battery pack that feeds a 66.9kW electric motor.
