Jaguar Land Rover to punch towards autonomous driving under new Nvidia partnership

The partnership aims to advance the level of AI-powered technology to make cars safer and more convenient for the driver

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced a multi-year partnership with American computer processor specialist Nvidia that will see the pair jointly develop autonomous driving and connected services technology.

The new driver assistance system will be known as Nvidia Drive and will be integrated into all new Jaguar and Land Rover models from 2025.

JLR and Nvidia partnership
Jaguar Land Rover group and Nvidia have formed a partnership to develop a new autonomous driving system

JLR says Nvidia Drive will control a wide spectrum of features including active safety technology (such as AEB), driver assistance systems and automated driving functions.

Nvidia will integrate its AI brain known as ‘Drive Orin’ into JLR’s cars to perform functions such as visualising the car’s environment and monitoring the driver.

The software will also be fully compatible with over the air updates that will allow Nvidia and JLR to iron out any issues ahead of time and without forcing the driver to go to a dealership.

Jaguar Alexa infotainment
It comes after Jaguar and Land Rover introduced Alexa into its infotainment systems to increase usability

It comes after JLR announced a partnership with Amazon that integrates its Alexa voice assistance function to boost the capability of its infotainment system to more easily perform tasks such as making phone calls and navigating to a specific address.

The introduction of the Nvidia Drive system in 2025 coincides with Jaguar’s self-imposed deadline to switch to an all-electric line-up that will be built on a new EV architecture.

Land Rover is transitioning more slowly and will introduce its first EV in 2024. The British brand will also introduce platforms capable of using electric and combustion powertrains in the coming years.
