BMW 2 Series convertible arriving in time for autumn

It might be the final month of summer in Australia, but BMW’s new 2 Series convertible gives us a reason to look forward to drop-top autumn motoring. The drop-top counterpart to the 2 Series coupe arrives on our shores at the end of February, with three petrol models – the 220i, 228i and M235i – rounding out the range.

No plans have been made for diesel models to join the variants later. That’s no problem for us, with the smoother, rortier-sounding petrols suiting the cabrio’s nature.

Replacing the 1 Series convertible, all 2 models come with bumps in power, increased rigidity, and quieter interiors thanks to redeveloped soft-top materials and mechanisms.

Compared to their coupe counterparts, each 2 Series convertible adds between $4,400 and $5,900 to the list price.

The 135kW 220i is fitted as standard with the excellent eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. There’s adjustable drive modes across the range, as well as satellite navigation, a reversing camera, and stop-start technology.

Adding larger 18-inch wheels, variable steering, xenon lights and proper leather, the 185kW 228i will be a sweet-spot in the range.

But it’s the halo M235i that will be the most exciting 2 convertible until a possible drop-top M2 hits later this year, or next. For now, the M-Performance model brings you adaptive M suspension, upgraded brakes, a wider infotainment screen and a badder looking exterior – paired to the mean 240kW, 450Nm turbo six we’ve loved in its coupe sibling.
