Range-topping Mitsubishi Triton Raider a twin-under-the-skin to recently released Nissan Navara Pro-4X at a $5000 premium
Mitsubishi Australia has confirmed pricing for its highly anticipated Triton Raider dual-cab flagship, which will start from $74,990 before on-road costs – nearly $10,000 ahead of the once-range topping Triton GSR.
The bold pricing move places the Raider unexpectedly ahead of up-market rivals $71,990 Toyota Hilux Rugged X, $69,890 Ford Ranger Wildtrak, and $73,000 Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain, all of which presently lead the premium dual-cab segment.
But the Raider’s largest pricing hurdle hits far closer to home, directly competing with the $69,890 Nissan Navara Pro-4X, which shares both the same platform as Triton as well as its Premcar suspension tune ace-in-the-sleeve.
As recently tested by Chasing Cars, the Nissan Navara Pro-4X proves to be functionally identical to the three-diamond flagship in both performance, trim, and grade structure. In flagship guise, the two vehicles share a capability-focused suspension tune aiming to improve ride comfort and control.
Under the bonnet of both utes sits a 2.4-litre twin-turbo diesel developing 150kW/470Nm. It is paired exclusively with a six-speed automatic – foregoing the option of a manual transmission – and four-wheel drive, complete with an electronic rear differential lock.
That drivetrain also appears in the once-flagship Triton GSR. Crucially, the new Raider and GSR share a nearly identical equipment list, most prominently separated by a Premcar tune, increased track width, protective panels, a wheel and tyre package, and variant-specific interior trim.
As previously reported by Chasing Cars, Premcar’s suspension tune consists of new front and rear dampers, new front springs with tweaked spring rates, and revised bump stops to enhance off-road ability.
A horizontally-mounted Yamaha damper – seen fitted on the Triton GSR – is retained to reduce suspension noise and harshness.
Bronze, 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped with Bridgestone AT002 all-terrain tyres have been specially selected with this tune in mind.
The Raider’s track width increases by 20mm, now 1590mm, while ride height increases by up to 25mm, now 1820mm. Unladen ground clearance at the front of the Triton Raider should be in the realm of 252mm.
Other features unique to the Triton Raider include uprated underbody protection, upgraded sports bar and side-protection, and unique decals including specific ‘Raider’ hub caps, ‘Sandstorm’ side decals, and ‘Raider’ badging.
Inside, the Raider gains black leather seats with orange stitching, and ‘Raider’ insignia on both the headrests and centre console. Otherwise, the Raider’s feature list mirrors the Triton GSR.
The new Triton Raider will be covered by Mitsubishi’s ten-year or 200,000 kilometer warranty, whichever comes first, as well as ten year capped-price servicing and ten years of road-side assistance.
Buyers must have all scheduled servicing completed at a certified dealership or repair centre to claim the benefits of Mitsubishi’s ‘10/10/10’ offer, else a five-year or 100,000km warranty applies.
