It’s goodbye ID.4 and ID.5, hello ID Tiguan
The Volkswagen Tiguan now has an electric version after the German car maker applied the nameplate of its biggest selling model to the facelifted ID.4.
VW’s new ID Tiguan follows the ID Polo and ID Cross as the company moves from numbers to more “humanised” names for its electric vehicles.
ID Tiguan replaces both the ID.4 SUV and its coupe-style twin, the ID.5, and is released in Europe in early 2027. Australian timing is likely to be in the second half of 2027.
Volkswagen is initially showing its updated rival to the likes of the Tesla Model Y in camouflaged prototype form, ahead of an official public unveiling at October’s Paris motor show.
Despite the camo, the ID Tiguan’s sharper styling and all-new headlights and tail-lights are obvious compared with the general droopiness of the ID.4.
UK media are reporting the vehicle is nearly half a centimetre longer than the ID.4 it will replace.
VW hasn’t issued any interior images but the ID Tiguan is expected to follow the ID Polo by introducing more physical controls while retaining a multi-function central touchscreen.
Volkswagen has yet to confirm major details such as battery sizes, but the ID.4’s current largest (77kWh) battery is expected to carry over.
The ID.4/ID.5 have been relatively successful electric vehicles for the VW Group, with about 950,000 global sales since its 2021 debut. However, in Europe it is comprehensively outsold by the Model Y, while it also trails both the Elroq and Enyaq EVs from fellow VW Group brand Skoda.
