Mercedes-AMG GT: 911-fighting Benz updated for 2020

Mercedes-AMG has announced a mid-life update for the barnstorming AMG GT range. A range of small tweaks are to be found outside – with the interior receiving more significant updates – bringing the two-door GT variants up to speed with their GT four door brother. The update is designed to take the fight to the new BMW M8 and M8 Gran Coupe, and the Porsche 992 Carrera range.

Accompanying the comprehensive tweaking to the AMG GT lineup, pricing for this uber-AMG has increased by an average of $12,000 across the range. Alongside the price update, the base GT variant has been dropped from the range, increasing the price of AMG GT entry by a significant $50,000. A full list of prices will appear at the end of this article.

For 2020, the AMG GT two-door receives comprehensive tech upgrades across the range. Borrowed from GT four-door brother, these updates include a subtle massaging of the interior design with an all-new centre console, and steering wheel with a rotary dial and shortcut button (think BMW’s M button) to select drive modes. Although subtle, the updates should bring the circa $300,000 GT back into play with recently refreshed competitors.

Two-door GTs will now feature a fully customisable 12.3-inch digital dash (similar to that found in the new A-Class), a much larger 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple and Android smartphone integration, Mercedes Me connect integration, and a front-mounted camera with traffic and speed-sign recognition.

Outside, the classic sports car appearance remains intact thanks to an expansive bonnet, muscular haunches, and short overhangs. Mercedes-AMG have subtly updated the look of the two-door GT range with new wheel designs, fresh paint colours, and sharp-looking LED headlights.

Mercedes-AMG have maintained the four-litre twin-turbo V8 across the range. The new entry GT S variant has been subtly tweaked, boasting the same 384kW of peak power, but increased torque. A tweaked tune now sees 670Nm from 1,900-5,000RPM where there was previously 650Nm delivered between 1,750-4,750RPM.

Power and torque remains identical across the other variants. The GT C Coupe and Convertible variants receive 410kW/680Nm, with the ballistic GT R coupe boasting 430kW/700Nm courtesy of the same four-litre V8. The seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox is a carryover too, and handles power transfer across all variants.

Although the price has risen, standard spec remains near identical. All GT variants come standard with adaptive cruise, blind-spot monitoring, AEB, and lane-keep assist.

Standard tech for the GT S variant includes a 640 watt ten-speaker audio system, electric heated nappa leather seats, panoramic sunroof, adaptive cruise control, navigation, lap timing, an electrically controlled LSD, active exhaust, staggered 19 and 20-inch alloy wheels finished in matte black, snazzy red brake calipers, and adaptive dampers.

Plenty of supplementary options are available too, with carbon fibre addenda available for just about any trim piece. Also optional is a carbon-ceramic brake upgrade, adding a whopping $17,500 to your AMG GT.

Additionally, the GT C Coupe and Convertible variants receive a microfibre covered steering wheel, performance seats with heating and cooling, rear-wheel steering, active engine and transmission mounts, a stiffer suspension tune, bespoke steering tune, and a set of staggered 19 and 20-inch five twin-spoke wheels in gloss grey.

The range-topping GT R gains gloss black interior details, loses the seat cooling, is equipped with a unique fixed rear wing, yellow brake calipers, stickier and wider 275/35 front, and 325/30 series rear tyres. A carbon fibre roof rounds out the package to lower the centre of gravity. The GT R drops weight elsewhere too, weighing in at 1,525kg (DIN), which is 100kg lighter than the 1,625kg GT S.
