Fresh after updating the 4-Series, pricing and specifications have been announced for the mid-life update of the performance 2017 BMW M3 and M4 , ahead of their Australian arrival in June. A new Pure model has been added to both the M3 and M4 ranges, which is claimed to be more track focussed and offer more value for money for the performance-minded.
Across both ranges are several subtle updates aimed at keeping the models fresh against competitors, namely the Mercedes-AMG C63S and Alfa Romeo Giulia QV. New LED headlights and tailights complete the exterior changes, whilst inside, BMW’s newest 8.8-inch iDrive infotainment setup is now available, and includes touchscreen functionality.
“The 2017 BMW M3 and M4 remains true to the BMW M Heritage with its combination of performance, premium feel and track-capable dynamics,” said BMW Group Australia CEO, Marc Werner.
“We are also pleased to reveal the 2017 M3 and M4 Pure variant for our local market. The Pure puts an even-sharper focus on the driver by combining the popular Competition package with an extremely competitive price point. It’s a true ‘enthusiast’s choice’,” he said.
The 2017 BMW M3 and M4 Pure are new additions to the M3 and M4 ranges in Australia, and follow the formula of the successful M2 Pure. The Pure models combine the added performance from the M3 and M4 Competition variants – a 331kW/550Nm tune of the turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine, allowing a 4.0 second sprint to 100km/h. BMW lists combined fuel consumption at 8.8L/100km and Co2 emissions of 204g/km.
In addition to an enhanced output, the Pure models also benefit from some dynamic changes. The adaptive M suspension has been revised, and spring rates have been increased by 15 percent to improve cornering ability. The interior gains front M Sport seats and M stripe seatbelts. The exterior gains a number of gloss black highlights, including the rear model badging, exhaust pipes, exterior grilles and BMW’s famous kidney grille. The M3 Pure features 19-inch alloy wheels finished in black, while the M3 Competition’s 20-inch alloy wheels are available.
Pricing for the 2017 BMW M3 Pure starts at $129,900 with the M4 Pure costing $139,900 – a full $10,000 less expensive than ‘regular’ models on which they’re based. While they do earn the competition package and more power, the Pure models also lose full-leather seating, adaptive LED headlights, heated front seats, a rear sunshade and the harman/kardon sound system. Still, they are well equipped, with BMW’s iDrive 6 Professional, a nine-speaker sound system, an alarm, keyless entry/start, an M heads-up display and a carbon fibre roof – steel if a sunroof is optioned – arriving as standard equipment.
The 2017 BMW M3/M4 and M3/M4 Competition also pick up minor updates for 2017, including adaptive LED headlights with a new daytime-running light signature than extends from the grille – much like the 4-Series LCI range which launched last year – along with upgraded interior trim elements, as well as additional colour options.
Both the 2017 BMW M3 and M4 update will appear in Australian showrooms in June, with the Pure models arriving a month afterwards.
