Flush with investment, confident from the success of the XC90 and firing on all cylinders, Volvo are preparing to launch their new flagship sedan in Australia this year.

The 2017 Volvo S90 will be offered with a range of petrol and diesel engines and initially in two luxury-focussed specifications.

Later, a sporty R-Design trim will be added alongside the arrival of a V90 station wagon version. It’s also entirely possible that Polestar will offer a dedicated performance S90 and V90 down the track.

The S90 is built on the XC90’s scalable architecture and the pair will share engines. In Australia, four motors will be offered.

A base trim called Momentum will be available with either a 187kW T5 turbo petrol ($79,900) or a 140kW D4 twin-turbo diesel ($82,400).

The higher grade, called Inscription, adds all-wheel-drive paired to either a 235kW T6 turbocharged-supercharged petrol ($98,900) or a 173kW D5 twin-turbo diesel ($96,900).

The 304kW T8 PHEV powertrain from the XC90 will join the range later.

For most buyers, Momentum models will have everything you need.

They feature leather, four-zone climate control, a 12-inch digital driver display, and electric front seats that offer memory for the driver. Outside, the Momentum includes the Hammer of Thor LED headlights that are a hallmark of modern Volvos, plus an electric tailgate and 18-inch alloys. On the safety front, there’s active cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring and automated parking.

For about another $17,000, Inscription models offer faster engines and all-wheel-drive. The Inscription also brings more features: namely, keyless entry and start, 19-inch wheels and nappa leather.

Volvo Australia have told Chasing Cars that it’s likely that buyers will be able to choose from a list of options that will include Apple CarPlay as a standalone option.

However, at this point the only firm detail on options is that a $3,000 Technology Package will be available on both Momentum and Inscription models.

That investment will add DAB radio, a 360-degree camera, a head up display and CarPlay.
