BMW have revealed key details 2020 G06 X6 sports activity coupe teased earlier this year. Due to land on Australian shores in the fourth quarter of 2019, BMW have announced the X6 will start at $121,900 (driveaway pricing not confirmed) for the xDrive30d diesel, with the petrol inline six xDrive40i mirroring the specification level at $124,900 (driveaway pricing not confirmed) and the range-topping M50i starting from $155,900 (driveaway pricing not confirmed). The X6 shares its power trains with recently announced variants of X5 and X7 SUV line-up.

First launched in 2008 the divisive E71 X6 sports activity coupe begun the era of iterating into ever-deeper niches. Despite its niche appeal the X6 has now become a mainstay, with BMW releasing the previous gen F16 model in 2014, adding the smaller X4 model line in the process. The G06 X6 will be vying for the king of the sports activity coupes alongside the Mercedes GLE, and be an alternative for those looking at upsizing from luxury coupes like the BMW 6 series, Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz E-class coupé to a vehicle with greater practical appeal.

The G06 X6 gains a more aggressive stance than outgoing F16 model; growing longer by 26mm, wider by 15mm, and lower overall by 6mm. The G06 X6 also grows in boot capacity by 30L to 580L, up from 550L in the F16.

Some styling cues won’t be for everyone, BMWs ever-growing kidney grills may not have been well received by purists, but they certainly lend the X6 front end presence. BMW have managed to stop the X6 looking like a squashed X5; it has unique lines and a distinct character, but this is still more a love it or hate it design than BMW’s other offerings.

The entry level xDrive30d is powered by a three-litre six-cylinder turbo diesel producing 195kW and 620Nm, which completes the sprint from 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds. The similarly priced xDrive40i is equipped BMWs mainstay B58 three-litre six cylinder turbo, with 250kW and 450Nm of torque propelling the X6 from 0-100km/h in 5.5 seconds.

The range-topping X6 M50i is equipped with a 4.4-litre twin turbo V8 outputting 390kW and 750Nm, sending the X6 from 0-100km/h in an impressive 4.3 seconds. Every X6 variant sends power through an eight-speed torque converter automatic to all four wheels via BMW’s xDrive system.

The X6 xDrive30d and xDrive40i share identical standard options, and although are more expensive than equivalent X5 SUV’s, the standard specification is higher. All X6 models are equipped with M sport package including adaptive dampers (standard across all Aussie X6s), 20-inch alloy wheels, vernasca leather, panoramic sunroof, parking assistant with 360 degree camera, head-up display, lane-keep assist, active cruise control, keyless go, wireless smartphone charging, and Apple carplay capability (though BMW only includes a one year subscription to the service).

On top of standard equipment BMW offer the xDrive30d/xDrive40i with several option packages including the ‘iconic package’ equipped with larger 22-inch alloy wheels, metallic paint, and glowing front kidney grills for $5,500. The ‘indulgence’ package can be optioned for $6,600 on top, including soft-close doors, heated front and rear seats, ventilated front seats, and massage function.

If you want to take your ‘sports activity coupe’ into the mud, BMW offer an xOffroad package for the xDrive30d/xDrive40i models with adaptive air suspension for $7,500, though exactly how far into the bush you can get on 20-inch wheels remains to be seen.

Moving up the range, the X6 M50i gets 22-inch alloy wheels, active steering, laser headlights, leather instrument panel, heated cup-holders, four-zone climate control, soft-close doors, harman/kardon audio system and metallic paint as standard.

The 2020 X6 lands in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2019, exact drive-away pricing and colour options will be revealed closer to its arrival down-under.
