Re-invented front-wheel drive MG4 Urban slices over $7500 from its entry price to become MG’s new cheapest EV

Australia’s cheap EV war has just gained a new contender, which will slash the entry price of its predecessor by over $7500.

Despite its name, the MG4 EV Urban (referred to hereafter as ‘MG4 FWD’), will have little to do with current generation MG4. So little in fact that the two vehicles are expected to sell side-by-side in Australia.

Where the current rear-drive MG4 starts from $39,677 drive-away (NSW D/A price), MG’s new front-wheel drive car will start from $31,990 national drive-away, becoming Australia’s second-cheapest EV behind the $23,990 before on-road costs BYD Atto 1.

The cut-throat drive-away pricing of the MG4 FWD will no doubt turn the heat up for key rivals, narrowly undercutting the BYD Atto 2, Australia’s cheapest EV SUV from $31,990 before on-road costs, and distancing itself from the Chery E5, priced from $36,990.

The new model will span two grades, differentiated by battery size. The entry-model MG4 Standard uses a 43 kWh battery, while the top-spec Long Range features a larger 54 kWh unit — pipping the entry-level MG4 RWD Excite’s battery by 3kWh.

Both models can charge from 10-80 percent in around 30 minutes, peaking at 150kW DC, and should produce 120kW/250Nm, though outputs are yet to be confirmed for local markets.

Also unconfirmed just days before the MG4 FWD’s April 2026 launch is pricing for the larger-batteried Long Range, as well as range figures for both variants. In China, the respective models claim driving ranges of 437km and 530km (CLTC).

The current MG4 RWD Excite produces 125kW/250Nm, can charge from 10-80 percent in 35 minutes (peaking at 88kW DC), and claims a driving range of 350km, though it has been tested to more accurate WLTP standards.

The front-driven MG4 is also slightly larger than its rear-drive counterpart, measuring 4395mm long (up 108mm), 1842mm wide (+6mm)and 1551mm tall (+47mm). The wheelbase has extended from 2705mm to 2750mm (+45mm) (Overseas dimensions shown).

Further local specifications for the MG4 FWD Standard and Long Range are expected to follow in the coming weeks, with the model slated to launch next month.

If specifications for the MG4 FWD are mirrored with its Chinese-market counterpart, buyers can expect a 15.6-inch infotainment touch screen and a ventilated 50-watt wireless device charger, among other features.
