New, electric iteration of the Mazda 6 medium sedan priced from $49,990 features strong ties to China’s Changan, two model grades, and a rear-drive exclusive drivetrain.

Mazda Australia has today priced its electrified Mazda 6 medium sedan revival, known as 6e, alongside further local specifications.

The 6e will span two grades – GT and Atenza – with prices starting from $49,990 scaling up to $52,990 (both before on-road costs). Initial deliveries for 6e are pencilled for July this year.

A joint venture with China’s state-owned automaker Changan, the 6e shares many of its key components, including its EPA1 electric-vehicle platform, with the locally available Deepal S07 midsize electric SUV. Both vehicles are assembled by Deepal/Changan in China.

But where the Deepal S07 rivals several value-focused midsize electric SUVs, like the Geely EX5, Zeekr 7x, and segment leading Tesla Model Y, the related Mazda 6e will focus on the more niche electric sedan market, predominantly rivalling the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal

Crucially, the $49,990 Mazda 6e GT undercuts the segment leading $54,990 Tesla, while remaining competitive with the sharply priced $46,990 BYD.

The 6e matches rivals on both range and performance, too, at least when comparing base trims. Both 6e grades produce 190kW/290Nm and claim a driving range of 560km (WLTP), featuring a rear electric motor and 78kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery.

The base model Tesla Model 3 RWD produces 208kW/350Nm and claims a range of 520km, and the base BYD Seal Dynamic an output of 150kW/350Nm and range of 460km.

However, where rivals offer an all-wheel drive performance variant for keen drivers, Mazda does not. Its range topping Atenza instead focuses on increasing interior comfort

Mazda claims a combined energy consumption of 15.9kWh/100km across both 6e grades, with a 30-80 percent rapid DC charge taking around 15 minutes

The Mazda 6e sizes up approximately 50mm larger in all dimensions over its combustion-powered ‘6’ predecessor, measuring 4921mm long, 1890mm wide, 1485mm tall, and driving on a 2895mm wheelbase.

Notable equipment on the base model 6e GT includes:

  • 10.2-inch TFT LCD instrument cluster
  • 14.6-inch infotainment touch screen
  • 19-inch alloy wheels
  • 360-degree camera
  • Augmented-reality active driving display
  • Tri-zone climate control
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • 64-colour ambient lighting
  • Premium Sony Audio with 14 speakers
  • Safety equipment including Blind Spot Monitoring with Vehicle Exit Warning, Lane support, and Smart Brake Support

While scaling up to the range topping 6e Atenza additionally grants:

  • Tan leather and synthetic suede seats with quilted stitching
  • Two-tone tan/black leather steering wheel
  • Tan synthetic suede dashboard and door trims

There will be only one option for the Mazda 6e available at release – a $1000 warm beige interior trim upgrade, exclusive to the GT. At launch, Mazda states its first 300 Mazda 6e GT buyers will be updated to the Atenza trim at no additional cost.
