Renault has declared its interest to build a Suzuki Jimny-rivalling compact off-roader, which will be known as the Bridger.

Detailed alongside Renault’s ‘futuREady’ product and electrification strategy, a production model Bridger should be on sale by the end of 2027 with a choice of petrol, hybrid, or electric power.

Renault claims the Bridger will target emerging markets, with the production model set to launch in India. Its powertrain will be market-dependent, with emission-conscious powertrains reserved for stricter regions such as Greater Europe.

The Bridger is penned to be smaller than the medium Duster soft-roader, measuring under four meters long, and featuring a ground clearance of 200mm. For reference, the two-door Suzuki Jimny measures 3480mm long, with a ground clearance of 210mm.

It is currently unconfirmed if the Bridger will come to Australia to join its new-release Duster sibling. If it is to debut, it should have a softer starting price to the $31,990 (before on-roads) Duster, to be competitive with the $31,990 Jimny.

What powertrains will be offered?

The Bridger will be with various powertrain types, with the entry-level petrol equipped with a 1.2-litre engine, a 1.6-litre four-cylinder hybrid or an electric setup that has not yet been specified, beyond the fact a 35kWh and 55kWh battery option will be available.

Further mechanical details, such as whether it will feature a low-range transfer case, have not yet been disclosed, though off-road enthusiasts will appreciate the rear-mounted full-size spare – and the 400 litres of space behind the swinging door.
