Facelifted Toyota Corolla debuts in Guangzhou, with styling to match its bZ4X, RAV4 and Camry siblings. Reports suggest a Chinese-market launch as early as December
A new Toyota Corolla sedan has recently debuted at the Guangzhou Motor Show, sporting a bold new look which better aligns the seven-year-old, 12th-generation model with its freshly facelifted bZ4X, RAV4, Hilux, and Camry siblings.
But this model, which employs Toyota’s new ‘hammer-head’ styling on the outside, and, according to a report from Autohome, features a larger 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen and revised 8.8-inch instrument cluster on the inside, is unlikely to see Australian soil.
Where the Australian market Corolla is produced by Toyota directly in Aichi, Japan, this model, referred to as ‘New Corolla’ by its number plate, is produced in Changchun, China, by joint venture FAW-Toyota.
Indeed, it’s more likely that the ‘New Corolla’ is a stopgap to bolster fierce Chinese-market sales, while Toyota Motor Corporation finalises its radical 13th-generation Corolla. In Australia, where the Corolla continues to lead the small car segment, such a rollout is less desired.
That 13th-generation car, revealed earlier this month as the “Corolla Concept”, previews a new ‘modular architecture’ direction for the Japanese automaker, and boasts the choice of plugless or plug-in hybrid power, as well as a dedicated EV powertrain.
But where the Corolla Concept looks towards revolution, “generation 12.5” steers more towards evolution.
Reports suggest that two powertrains will be available when the model launches to the Chinese market in December — a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre petrol ‘four, producing 128kW, or a 1.8-litre plugless hybrid, likely a series parallel, producing around 103kW.
The left-hand drive display car features an extended 2750mm wheelbase (up 50mm), according to Autohome, while boot capacity reportedly remains unchanged, at 470 litres.
As a result, rear passenger leg- and head-room have improved markedly.
Images of ‘generation 12.5’ reveal new-look 17-inch wheels, and restyled ‘hammer-head’ bumpers, as well as a powered sunroof, likely reserved as an option.
‘New Corolla’ sports an overhauled interior, too, reportedly featuring a new 8.8-inch instrument cluster and larger 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen (Australian models are equipped with either an 8.0- or 10.5-inch screen, depending on variant).
The large touchscreen integrates key driver controls, including air conditioning settings like temperature and fan-speed, drive modes, and… “Yifeng Mall National Karaoke” – chalk that up to ‘lost in translation!’
Beneath the 12.9-inch screen is a wireless phone charger. The interior also features cruise control functionality on the steering wheel, power-adjust front seats, and in the boot, an obtuse toolkit with no spare wheel – full size or otherwise – in sight.
