The third-generation Mitsubishi Challenger SUV debuts at the Bangkok International Auto Show, taking place on August 1. The Triton-based seven-seater arrives to replace the seven-year-old current model. With a new engine and a handsome new design coined Dynamic Shield, the Challenger will be a fierce competitor to the new Ford Everest (discover the Ford Everest 2016 price and specs here). The big Mitsubishi will also square off against the Holden Colorado 7, Isuzu MU-X, and the forthcoming Toyota Fortuner—all ute-based wagons.

The Challenger shares the chassis and underpinnings of the brand-new Triton utility, and it will be similar behind the wheel. You can see our thoughts right now by watching our Mitsubishi Triton review here.

Mitsubishi Challenger Review

Design characteristics have been influenced by Mitsubishi’s new Dynamic Shield language, which debuted on the Outlander SUV. Mitsubishi have released a shadowy sneak-peak today, though their patent submissions have largely given away how the new model will look.

Challenger will benefit from Triton’s new 2.4-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder. While its outputs of 133kW and 430Nm aren’t class-leading, they are sufficient to tow 3.1 braked tonnes in the Triton. Plus, the new engine is punchier and more refined than a number of competitors, including the Holden Colorado.

With more families choosing utes and ute-based SUVs as family cars, the Challenger will respond with a more car-like driving experience. Comfort has sat alongside off-roading capability as the major focus points for Mitsubishi engineers in the new model’s development.
