With the third generation Audi Q5 and SQ5 set to hit our shores in the coming weeks, will the promise of more significant value in this premium SUV ring true to buyers?
Audi has unveiled pricing and specifications of the Q5 and SQ5 range in Australia, with its most popular vehicle globally now built on its new Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) underpinnings, in pursuit of greater driving dynamics and refinement.
The Australian launch of the Q5 range will consist of five variants, one of which, the SQ5 Edition One, will only be available for a limited time, Sportback variants of the Q5 and SQ5 to follow later in the year.
Kicking off at $81,000 (before on-road costs), the Q5 range will arrive in Australia in a matter of weeks to take on the likes of the new-generation BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC, along with the Lexus NX and Genesis GV70 in the popular luxury midsize SUV segment.
The Q5 will launch with two engine options, a petrol front-wheel drive and a diesel all-wheel drive – all 150kW, all turbocharged and equipped with a mild-hybrid system.
The mild-hybrid system will generate additional torque of up to 230Nm, and up to 18kW. The Q5 also features progressive steering and frequency-selective dampers as standard across the range, in an effort to pursue improved dynamics.
The updated Audi SQ5 continues to be powered by a V6 petrol engine with all-wheel drive, which will accelerate from 0-100km in a claimed 4.5 seconds.
The entry-level Q5 TFSI is powered by a four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, seven-speed automatic transmission sending power to the front wheels exclusively.
Standard equipment for the base model Q5 incudes:
The TDI Quattro doesn’t gain any extra features from the base model Q5. It’s powered by a four-cylinder, turbo diesel MHEV engine, seven-speed automatic transmission and is all-wheel drive (AWD).
It is also faster than the TFSI, going from 0-100km in 7.4 seconds, 1.2 seconds quicker than the petrol base model. It is also the most fuel efficient, with a claimed combined fuel economy of 5.4 litres per 100km.
With an identical engine and powertrain to the TDI Quattro, the Quattro Sport gains some extra flashy ‘sporty’ bits and bobs to make the Quattro Sport… well… extra sporty.
Standard equipment for the Q5 TDI Sport incudes:
The SQ5 Edition One is on offer for a limited time at launch to Australian customers, featuring unique features to set it apart inside and out.
Inside, you’ll see leather appointed upholstery complemented by S embossing, stainless steel pedals, and a flat-top and bottom multifunction steering wheel, just to name a few.
Being an SQ5, the powertrain jumps to a six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, with a seven-speed automatic transmission and AWD.
Exterior upgrades include:
This range topping SQ5 sports a six-cylinder turbocharged MHEV petrol engine with a seven-speed automatic transmission with an AWD powertrain, making it (and the Edition One with the identical engine) the fastest, but the thirstiest, with a claimed combined fuel consumption of 7.6-litres per 100km.
Standard equipment for the range topping SQ5 incudes:
All prices listed are before on-road costs.
