New kid mid-size SUV offers combustion or mild hybrid powertrains, with a plug-in soon to follow.
Cupra Australia has confirmed its new Terramar mid-size SUV will land in two trims, with the S mild-hybrid starting at $58,490, driveaway.
One step up is the V petrol-only Terramar from $66,490, while a range topping VZ variant is due September, boasting a wealth of features and starting price of $73,490 (both driveaway).
The Terramar diversifies Cupra’s offerings in the medium SUV segment. It runs alongside the electric-only Tavascan as a combustion-powered offering. Cupra says a plug-in hybrid is due some time in 2026.
Cupra’s Terramar is 4519mm long, 1863mm wide, 1584mm tall, and ride on a wheelbase of 2681mm.
The Spanish brand is the sporty, semi-luxe arm of the Volkswagen brand, meaning the Terramar will use the same MQB Evo platform as VW’s Tiguan and Skoda’s Kodiaq, though thrusts a little upwards to the likes of the Volvo XC40 and BMW X2.
A 110kW/250Nm mild-hybrid 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine motivates the entry-level Terramar S’s front wheels. Rated consumption is an impressive 5.7L/100km.
Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, 15-inch infotainment touchscreen, heated and powered front seats and a suite of driver assistance features.
Stepping up a grade into the V ditches the 48-volt MHEV in favour of a 150kW/320Nm 2.0-litre turbo petrol petrol engine with all-wheel drive.
Included features are identical to the S, with both vehicles offering a single $1600 ‘leather and sound’ pack that brings burgundy leather upholstery and a 12-speaker Sennheiser sound system.
The Terramar VZ range topper features the familiar 195kW/400Nm ‘EA888’ 2.0-litre turbo–petrol four-cylinder, which is the same you’ll find in a Golf GTI.
Additional features on the VZ include 20-inch alloy wheels, dynamic chassis control (adaptive dampers), upgraded brakes and matrix LED headlights.
While pricing and specs have not yet been revealed for the Terramar PHEV, we anticipate a specification similar to the Tiguan PHEV, detailed recently by Chasing Cars.
In Europe, Volkswagen’s Hybrid PHEV systems combine an 85kW electric motor and 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol four, the latter available in either 152kW or R-Line-specific 202kW guises.
It additionally features a 25.7kWh (gross) battery, which allows up to roughly 100 kilometres of pure EV driving range.
