New generation Mazda CX-5 on the horizon for Australia, bringing unique styling and in-house designed hybrid system

The first image of the new, third-generation Mazda CX-5 has surfaced online, with a leaked picture appearing on @Car Design News on Instagram and Spanish car forum Cochespias

Even better, this new version of Mazda’s best-seller could be released in Australia in as little as six months with a home-grown hybrid system to challenge the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, Nissan X-Trail and more.

The image clearly shows a Mazda CX-5 — the number plate gives that away — which heavily resembles past camouflaged spy images as well as speculative renders

The new CX-5 undoubtedly takes styling inspiration from its premium sister car, the Mazda CX-60, which recently received a third wave of updates for the Australian market. Both vehicles employ Mazda’s ‘Kodo’ design language.

The global reveal of the new CX-5 is expected in Q3 2025, according to Mazda South Africa managing director Craig Roberts, with an Australian launch scheduled between late 2025 and early 2026.

Headlining the launch will be a new in-house designed hybrid system, confirmed by Mazda and expected to take on the upcoming Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and current model Hyundai Tuscon Hybrid.

Last year in 2024, despite being seven years old, Mazda shifted 22,835 CX-5s. It currently starts at $36,740 (list price), and has continually been Mazda’s best selling model in Australia, as well as Mazda’s most popular car globally.
