Large Volvo EV super-sedan now available to order, headlined by two launch grades. But Aussies will miss out on all-wheel drive for now

Volvo Australia has priced its ES90 flagship large sedan, which has released in two rear-driven grades.

Pricing starts at $88,880 for the base model ES90 Plus Single Motor, and tops out at $107,990 for the ES90 Ultra Single Motor. Both prices shown are before on road costs.

The ES90 measures 5000mm long, 2120mm wide, 1546mm tall and rolls on a 3102mm wheelbase. This means the ES90 is larger in all dimensions than its 4963mm long S90 combustion counterpart.

Outside, standard features of the ES90 include ‘Thor Hammer’ headlights, large 20-inch alloy wheels (21 inches in Ultra grade), a sleek, aerodynamic front clip and ‘C’ shaped LED rear tail lights which sit below a hatchback-esque glass lift-back.

Inside, the driver is greeted by a 9.0-inch digital cluster, heads up display, and large 14.5-inch central infotainment touchscreen. Further inside the cabin is a panoramic roof with adjustable transparency, four-zone climate control and heated front and rear seats.

A 14-speaker sound-system is fitted as standard, while the Ultra gains a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system.

Additional equipment for the ES90 Ultra includes active air suspension, LED front headlights, nappa leather upholstery, front seat massaging and ventilation, and power-adjustable rear seats.

Built in China, both models of ES90 undercut key segment rivals, including the $155,900 BMW i5 and $135,200 Mercedes-Benz EQE. Unlike its rivals however, the ES90 does not currently offer a high-performance all-wheel drive variant, at least in Australia.

Both the ES90 Plus and Ultra utilise the same single motor rear wheel drive EV platform, which develops 245kW/480Nm, features a 92kWh NMC battery, a rapid DC 10-80% charge time of 22 minutes (peaking at 300kW), and a WLTP range of 554km

Home charging takes approximately 10 hours by use of a three-phase AC charger, and a sprint from 0-100km/hr takes 6.6 seconds.

The ES90 uniquely features 800-Volt electronic architecture, a first for the Swedish brand.

It is built upon Volvo/Polestar’s ‘SPA2’ electronic vehicle platform – shared by the recently released EX90 and Polestar 3 large electric SUVs  – and will likely be the last SPA2 Volvo to come to Australia

Volvo has confirmed in global markets that the soon to release EX60 electric midsize SUV will premiere a new ‘SPA3’ platform, which will be used for all future Volvo EV products.

Despite a presence in overseas markets, Volvo Australia does not currently offer an all-wheel drive variant of ES90.

For now, Aussies miss out on two potential all-wheel drive powertrains which boast 330kW/670Nm or 500kW/870Nm in range topping form.
