The most affordable ute from GWM will soon be available with a plug-in hybrid option that could be cheaper, and perhaps more capable, than the BYD Shark 6
GWM has confirmed its Cannon ute will join a growing arsenal of plug-in hybrid options within its lineup by the middle of 2026, with a price that could undercut the sales-leading BYD Shark 6.
The Hi4-T system, which retains a mechanical driveline typically better suited to rugged off-road and towing duties, with the latter rated at the same 3.5-tonne capacity as the rest of the model range.
Unlike the larger and more premium-focused Cannon Alpha, the Cannon will not need to migrate its full-size spare wheel to the tray to make way for the battery pack.
Exact specifications have not yet been confirmed, though Car News China reported on Chinese government filings earlier this month that indicated the Cannon PHEV would utilise a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine and a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, though the capacity was not stated.
It’s likely the Cannon PHEV will be fitted with the same 2.0L turbo-petrol plug-in setup as the Cannon Alpha, Tank 500 and Tank 300, which all feature a total system output of 300kW and 750Nm.
If reports out of China prove to be true, the Cannon could differentiate itself from its siblings by having an LFP battery, rather than the large 37.11kWh Nickel Manganese Cobalt unit found across the range. A smaller LFP battery could assist with fitting an underslug spare tyre, though likely come with reduced range.
On the upside, an LFP battery would be better suited to charging up to 100 percent without compromising longevity.
Using the Cannon Alpha as a guide, the Cannon PHEV is likely to cost between $9500 and $10,500 more than its equivalent diesel variant.
That would mean the Cannon PHEV could start from $51,000 driveaway – a price that would see it undercut the BYD Shark 6 (at $57,990 driveaway). Similarly, the Ultra could be priced at $54,990 driveaway.
Currently, driveaway deals on the Cannon Alpha PHEV see prices reduced even further, to $51,490, suggesting the more junior Cannon PHEV could go even lower.
The more mainstream Ford Ranger PHEV currently starts at $79,160 driveaway in NSW.
