GWM Ora 5 small SUV unveiled, bolstering local electric line-up from $33,990 driveaway

All-new model plugs a key gap for the Chinese brand at the affordable end of the electric car market

GWM has today unveiled its Ora 5 at the Melbourne Motor Show, its crucial and potential volume-selling electric small SUV. It will hit local showrooms in June this year, priced from $33,990 driveaway for the base Lux grade.

A higher-specification Ultra version is also offered, priced from $36,990 driveaway.

At 4.47 metres in length, the Ora 5 is on the larger side of ‘small’ – Toyota Corolla Cross sized – with a “retro” exterior design that’s clearly shared with the (70mm) shorter and smaller Ora compact hatchback. Boot space is 362 litres.

The Ora 5 features a front-driven electric motor outputting 150kW and 260Nm, powered by a 58.3kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. It’s claimed that the peak range is up to 430km (WLTC) with energy consumption advertised at 15.5kWh/100km.

Australian specification quotes a DC charging peak of 120kW for a 10-80 percent charging time of 30 minutes. A 6.0kW-rated vehicle-to-load charging capability is also offered.

The Ora 5 is underpinned by a chassis adopting strut front and multi-link rear suspension, with an adjustable regenerative braking system.

Inside, the Ora 5 features a 10.25-inch digital driver’s screen and 14.6-inch media touchscreen in both variants, as well as leatherette seat trim, six-way powered driver’s seat, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and a 360-degree camera system.

The three-grand upcharge for the Ultra adds a glass roof, an electric tailgate, nine-speaker audio, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting, wireless phone charging and other spruce-ups. Both versions fit seven airbags and a comprehensive list of active driver safety and assistance technologies.

The Ora 5 range will debut in a choice of five exterior paint options, each paired specifically with either a black or light cream interior theme.

The newcomer will launch in BEV-only guise and it’s unclear whether GWM Australia will add the 1.5-litre turbo petrol-electric hybrid powertrain, offered in some overseas markets, locally in future.

However, GWM Australia states that “the Ora 5 marks the beginning of an expanded Ora line-up (locally), with additional new models scheduled to arrive throughout this year and into 2027”.
