New hybrid drivetrain arrives for KGM Torres with pricing a peg above its petrol equivalent
KGM Australia (formerly SsanYong) has today launched a plugless hybrid drivetrain for its Torres midsize SUV. The new variant marks KGM’s first production hybrid vehicle, which claims a combined fuel economy of 5.6L/100km and starts from $45,000 drive-away.
The base model Torres Hybrid K30 commands a $9000 premium over the combustion-only Torres ELX, while the hybrid range topping ($48,000) K40 costs $5000 more than its petrol-only Ultimate counterpart.
Much like key rivals Toyota RAV4 GX and Subaru Forester Hybrid, the Torres Hybrid uses a plugless series parallel hybrid system. Those cars, which dominate the midsize SUV segment, start from $45,990 and $46,490 respectively, before on-road costs.
But where the Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester offer hybridisation and all-wheel drive, both grades of Torres Hybrid are limited to front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive remains exclusive to the petrol-only Torres Ultimate.
The Torres Hybrid system combines a 110kW/220Nm 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine and dedicated hybrid transmission with a 1.8kWh high voltage battery and dual electric motors to produce a combined system output of 150kW.
The hybrid system claims a combined fuel economy of 5.6L/100km, where the non-hybrid front-driven Torres claims 7.4L/100km.
Standard equipment on the base Torres Hybrid K30 includes:

Visually, the Torres Hybrid differs from its petrol sibling by use of new wheel designs, blacked-out C-pillars, and hybrid badging. Inside, the two models are identical.
All Torres models measure 4705mm long, 1890mm wide, 1720mm tall, and feature a 2680mm wheelbase.
