Geely Starray hybrid pricing undercuts BYD’s Sealion 6 but trails Chery Tiggo 7

Geely’s second model in Australia – and first hybrid – is priced from $39,990 before on-road costs as it begins to ramp up its local showroom assault

Geely’s Starray EM-I plug-in hybrid hasn’t been priced as sharply as expected ahead of its Australian launch, though it still undercuts rival midsize PHEV SUVs with the exception of the Chery Tiggo 7.

Starray pricing has been revealed on automotive data site Redbook, showing a starting price of $39,990 before on-road costs for the entry Complete grade, with a $3000 premium for the higher-spec Inspire.

The entry price for the Starray is only $1000 less than Geely’s fully electric EX5 medium SUV that shares its platform. It suggests the EX5 BEV is being more heavily subsidised in Australia by China’s Geely, considering the plug-in hybrid would be cheaper to build.

However, it’s possible Geely Australia could still announce a drive-away deal at the Starray’s September launch, which would match the $39,990 drive-away starting price for what is currently the cheapest plug-in medium SUV, the Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid.

An online configurator is already in place for the Starray, though drive-away calculations are not currently offered. Geely is advertising a pre-launch offer where the brand will match a customer’s $1000 deposit.

Other Chinese competitors are more expensive. The BYD Sealion 6 costs from $45,500 drive-away, with a $47,990 drive-away price for the Jaecoo J7.

Starray’s petrol engine, electric motor and battery combination delivers a WLTP electric range of 83km and a WLTP combined range of 943km, making it competitive with its fellow Chinese rivals.

Both Starray models are front-wheel-drive only, sharing a drivetrain that combines a 73kW/125Nm petrol engine with a 160kW/262Nm front electric motor, and 17kWh (useable) battery.

The Starray is just over 4.7 metres in length, making it about 12.5cm longer than the related EX5 and placing it between the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and BYD Sealion 6 in size.
