Omoda 9 confirmed for Australian Q3 release with oodles of power and an EV range above 140km
Chery has confirmed its Omoda 9 mid-size SUV will make its Australian debut in the third quarter of 2025.
The plug-in five-seater recently launched as a right-hand driver in the UK — approximately one year after its March 2024 Chinese release, where it sells under the catchy title of Exceed Xingtu Yaoguang C-DM.
The launch of the Omoda 9 coincides with parent company Chery’s decision to drop the ‘Chery’ prefix to future Omoda products, with an Aussie naming rollout slated to begin imminently in the mid-year.
Expected to launch as a plug-in hybrid, the Omoda 9 will rival the upcoming Toyota RAV4 PHEV and outgoing Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which is set to receive a mid-life update by the end of this year. Rivals from China include the Haval H6GT PHEV and BYD Sealion 6.
The Omoda 9 measures 4775mm long, 1920mm wide (excluding mirrors), 1671mm tall, and runs on a wheelbase of 2800mm, making it unquestionably midsize, and almost dimensionally identical to the Sealion 6.
We predict that the Oz-market Omoda 9 will debut with the same, single trim offering which headlined its UK release. The ‘one size fits all’ Noble trim package is headlined by an incredibly powerful plug-in hybrid all-wheel drive powertrain, which claims a combined output of 330kW/700Nm.
The high-output drivetrain combines a 105kW 1.5-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engine with three electric motors. Two are mounted within the three-speed hybrid transmission, developing 75kW and 90kW, and a final 120kW electric motor is mounted directly to the rear axle.
Omoda claims a combined EV-only driving range of 145km (WLTP) – impressive for a PHEV, and attributed to a large 34kWh battery. The hybrid powertrain, in conjunction with a 70-litre fuel tank, means the car can travel up to 1127km. As for charging, an 80kW rapid DC charge from 30 to 80 percent will take 28 minutes.
RRP starts at £36,937.50, which equates to around $AUD 77,000. Chasing Cars understands the retail price of the Omoda 9 is likely to change for our market, with a more reasonable figure around the $60,000 mark.
This would still command a $15,000+ premium over the outgoing BYD Sealion 6 — arguably the Omoda 9’s closest competitor, and priced at $45,524 driveaway.
In the UK, the Omoda 9 runs on 20-inch wheels, and offers five unique paint colours: a no cost ‘Quartz White’, premium ‘Hawk’s Eye Grey’ for £1000(~$AUD 2085), and Andesite Grey, Peridot Green, and Onyx Black, all priced at £750 (~$AUD 1565).
