After launching an investigation and immediately halting sales last month, Suzuki has resumed sales but provided little detail as to why the Jimny XL was under the microscope

Suzuki’s most popular model in Australia – the Jimny XL – is back on sale after a sudden and mysterious sales halt came into effect early last month.

In late July, a dealer bulletin issued directly from Suzuki Japan was revealed by Australian media. The bulletin instructed Australian dealers to stop all sales of Indian-assembled Jimny XL models while “an issue [was] being investigated”.

Reportedly, the three-door Jimny, which is assembled in Japan, was not affected by the halt.

Today, Suzuki Australia has publicly announced that its investigation into the Jimny XL has concluded; confirming that “there are no concerns regarding the Jimny XL’s quality, safety, performance or compliance.” Suzuki has not disclosed the reason for the investigation.

It is unclear whether unsold Jimny XL models will be modified or inspected by dealers prior to sale, and further, Suzuki has not confirmed if Jimny XL owners should anticipate recalls or repairs to their vehicles in the future.

Chasing Cars has reached out to Suzuki Australia for comment on this matter and will update this story if any further information is shared.

Three-door Jimny variants are also under fire, as well as the S Cross, Vitara and Swift Sport. New-build versions of these vehicles haven’t been available for importing as of March 2025, following changes to the Australian Design Regulations (ADR).

Chasing Cars understands that the Japanese-built Jimny three-door is not ADR compliant due to the performance of its front AEB system. The Jimny five-door, which is built in an entirely separate facility in India, has remained compliant with the new ADR.

Suzuki’s Jimny is resoundingly the Japanese brand’s most popular model, last year selling 9697 units across the three-door and five-door variants. The combined Jimny sales figure totals 46-percent of all Suzuki car sales (21,278 units).
